the mysteries of Appalachia

I've always heard stories about how Appalachia is one of the most dangerous regions in terms of paranormal activity in the US. I remember a saying that went something like "never whistle in Appalachia and if someone calls your name never answer." I was wondering if anyone knows of or has experienced any paranormal events in the region, perhaps sightings of Wendigos or other creatures from folklore!
