Forum: Reclaiming the Internet Group

I’ve made a blog entry about it on my profile but I thought I will post it here

I was thinking about using old tech. I mean flip phone, camera, MP3 plater, use my laptop more. I’ve just started to feel very overwealmhed by Tiktok, Instagram and other social medias. Are any of you using flip phone cause I want to know your opinions, cons and prons about it? Let me know!!

well I recently switched to a old phone, its not a flipphone but I have some stuff to share ^^

tbh I cant access the internet somehow idk why, and that's a lot of trouble for me but Ive already bought it soo... I'm planing to get an ipad so that I can still do the stuff I want to (especally to draw)

and it can take a while to understand the old tect in general but I stil reccomend it.

maybe its just my phone's problem, I'm sure you'll find a useful flipphone to yourself!!

and also if things doesnt work out like in my case you can still get other secondary devices like m3/4 players and all so you'll be fine for sure :3

Early this year I started using paper notebooks and journals constantly again. Does it count?

Hi! maybe you can have a different view on it, maybe the device you already have is good enough. I always think about it like this, i bought a new phone like 3-4 years ago?, it still works perfectly, i have the iphone 13 and downloaded the Dumbify ( ithink its called). I always say to me and other people (everybody in my circle know how i am over the "modern" stuff haha, that i still payed a good money for that phone and it has great camera for example, so i will try and "use it up" and than look for other things. I think its still great to think about it,  that the new technology is making our life easier in some way, you just have to learn to use it and not abuse it. But go for it, Mp3 is amazing, it feels great to "own" music, buying physicall is still top tier. Try taking camera and journal with you maybe you will see, if you really need modern phone or you are okay with old stuff. But be prepared that a lot of people you "have" in life, will not keep in contact if you are not on the socials or 24/7 online- at least that happend in my life :)

I recently ordered an ipod nano 5thgen and im STOKED for it to come in! Missed a lot of awesome old tech as a kid growing up with really strict parents and ive been really falling into the nostalgia trap recently. I had a full breakdown last night and deleted every social media on my phone and i'm only using them on my PC like the old days and trying to stick to stuff like Ipod for music instead of having to have my phone on and getting distracted by notifications and such during the day.

Dont even get me started on getting a green zenith tv when I move again soon LOL

Something else to consider; if your phone is also your camera, music player, wallet, maybe even your keys (somehow), and if that thing takes a nosedive into a river or gets swiped by someone on an e-bike, you've just lost all of those things all at once.  How would you cope in that scenario?

If you had those as separate things and your phone got lost or stolen that would be a bad day, but at least you still had your wallet and keys to get home and sort things out.

Thinking about it now, those phone wallets that you put your bank cards in seem like a really dangerous idea.  Aside from also loosing your way to pay for anything, say it gets swiped by someone on an e-bike, think of the extra information the thief is getting: name (on bank cards) address (on driving license).

The other thing that comes along with using your phone for everything is that it creates a barrier to leaving the phone behind if you decide you want to; 'I want time away from my phone but then I'd be without my camera' or 'I want time away from my phone but then I'd be without my music' etc.

Some of you may find this interesting, the guy is pretty entertaining: I hate my phone so I got rid of it

i've been using older stuff since 2018/2019 and it's da bomb!! i love my iPod..it's one of the best music players you can buy, i think all the models are great, but the iPod nano is a great one! my favourite is the 5th gen nano, but the 2nd & 3rd gen are also amazing!! also, don't pay a ton, the nanos really aren't worth more than $50!! i also love my cameras..this is something i don't have a specific recomendation about, all brands seem to take really fun pictures, though i always love Canon, Fujifilm, and Hewlett Packard (HP). same with these, don't pay a ton..a majority of point'n'shoot cameras are quite basic and way overpriced, don't pay more than $50!! lastly, the flip phone....i know so many people have been going on and on about how cool they are, how they want them back..i get it! i used one for 7 months (oct. 23' - aug. 24') and it was ok. the biggest issue with using a flip-phone now is how everything is online or needs an app..parking passes, restaurant menus, even navigation is hard to get working! if you want to do it, you have to have a very simple or disconnected life because it's gonna be hard!!

can't say i feel safe with new tech, and i don't have money or desire to buy it anyway lol. i really like using old laptops and trying to repair them.

not sure about flip phones, because i don't have spare money to try it, but it seems like a good idea to me. or at least to have flip phone + regular smartphone, but leaving smartphone only for essential stuff like banking apps, ID, etc. i feel like it would be a healthy separation.

and MP3 players is always a good idea tbh. i don't use streaming services anyway, and all of my songs (and videos) sit in my phone. maybe i will try to save some money and buy a player after all!

"the biggest issue with using a flip-phone now is how everything is online or needs an app..parking passes, restaurant menus"

This will continue if people don't push back.

For restaurants you could ask for a paper menu, if they don't have one you could leave for a restaurant which does have them.  A lot of businesses are struggling at the moment, this is probably going to have a bigger effect than you think.  Do you really think a business will want to loose their customers just because they didn't print out their menu?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by parking passes, but in some parts of the world it is illegal to turn down payment based on payment preference and / or turn down legal tender.  If you have legal tender (coins / bank notes) to pay for your parking but they have no way to accept it, that's on them and if you get some sort of fine you might be able to get them to backtrack pretty quickly.  That's not advice, just something to think about.

I think a lot of this 'we don't take cash' / 'use the app' stuff is people seeing what they can get away with, they may not have the footing in law to do what they're doing, but that doesn't matter if you accept it.  On the other hand, when challenged they may cave in easier than expected.

I'm reading this on 20 year old acer laptop(TravelMate-2410), on older laptops is great to install Linux so they can be useful again, and if someone wanna keep windows XP for aesthetic, it can be dual-boot (every start you can choose if you wanna use Linux or windows. I have Linux mint and have this old laptop as main, and I install Linux and use it without any experience with Linux so it isn't problem for not advanced users like me, plus internet tutorials are free.

edit: the same laptop what I have on my pfp, and use button Nokia 225 4G, good for countries where 2G was shut down so old phones can't be used. and I use soial media like tiktok ,instagram, snapchat, facebook and messenger on PC, even bank app can be use in web browsers

I don't have a flipphone so I can't provide insight into that BUT I also deleted all social media from my phone and only use it on my computer! I've been without tiktok, instagram, etc for years now and I'm much happier for it. I always felt obligated to go on instagram when I had it and all it did was make me unhappy, I'd basically use it to fill the time when I was bored. Now, I'm much better at being bored and I believe it's made me a more creative and patient person. I still use tumblr occassionally but only on my computer and I use youtube ofc for video essays and silly videos and stuff.

I'm also really into film photography, I've been doing it for about 3 years now and its very worth it. Ofc, film isn't accessible for everyone and not everyone wants to have to do so much work for photos so digital cameras are also really good and fun! I have a sony handycam personally and i've found it really fun to just take around with me while i'm with friends. I don't post the photos or videos anywhere, its just fun to have. I find that when using a physical camera, I value the photos I take more than I do with my phone, so I only really use my phone camera when my real camera isn't around or I need to take a photo of something important to remember later! I remember almost every roll of film I've processed (quite a few have been lost bc of stupid mistakes or my camera breaking but oh well!) and because there's a limited number of photos I can take, I take extra care to take photos that I think I will appreciate later on. I also have bad luck with technology in general and have technically gone through several cameras that broke on me but finally landed on the perfect camera for me- the Nikkormat! it's pretty much entirely mechanical- there's a lightmeter embedded in it but I can't get the battery anymore so I can just guess at the fstop or use my lightmeter app if need be lol

I also have an ipod shuffle and use CDs. It changes the experience of listening to music for me. Partially because I have to spend time uploading albums to my ipod so it feels excited when I actually finally get to listen to everything (my pc HATES itunes and crashes repeatedly LMAO) and partially bc it feels more adventurous in a way.

I've used records a lot my entire life too, I don't have my own record player but my parents have a big record collection so I'm quite familiar. Records feel special in a way. idk, there's a lot of benefits to phones and computers but physical media is just so much more interesting than screens and I would absolutely recommend you explore it a bit. plus, you might learn some history while you're at it!
