How can we make the internet a better place?

I am wondering what your thoughts are on the internet, and how we can improve it.

I would think that in order to make the internet a better place, you couldn't really do it too directly, only by being nice yourself, and making friends with other people who aren't making the internet a nice place.I think that the reason so many people are rude or unpleasant on the internet is just because everyone else is, and being too nice, or even just liking certain things can be met with judegment or pushback, so being nice to others could make them be nice to others

fair point that kindness and betterment start with oneself. Although, I would like to add that you had to stand up for what you'd believe in or hold onto a virtue to live by. some people out there will always disagree with you, or will dislike you for what you stand for or believe in and there's nothing you could do about it. Of course, the disagreement and dislikes aren't concurrent all the time but you get the point. No matter if others is "Nice" or "Unpleasant and Rude", there's always underlying malice with some individuals. I recommend strong moderation and vigilance from the communities because... let's be real, we're not just dealing with cybercriminals or annoying trolls. We have to deal with spammers and bots pretending to be humans. Those need to BTFO.

Silly Susurri, that'd empty out the majority of Spacehey's userbase!

i think the easiest way to improve the internet would be to make
privacy laws stricter. if you follow the rabbit hole, almost everything
about the enshittification of the internet can be traced back to
"companies want your data to sell you stuff, and the internet happens to
be a great way to collect that data".

but if we're talking
comprehensive change, i think old web culture is so beloved in hindsight
for a crucial reason: the internet was a place, and you could walk away
from it. it didn't take up so much of our society that it was
impossible to avoid. i love the revival of dumb phones/dumb-er phones
for this reason! it's all about the intention in how we as a society
connect.

i'm not saying that places that benefit from a digital
infrastructure should abandon it, but i am saying that in our personal
lives, there's no need to let it all be controlled by rich guys. using
open-source (or otherwise smaller) alternatives to stuff is key, as is
supporting right-to-repair and rejecting planned obsolecence whenever
you can.

i'll probably make a blog post about this sort of thing down the line, but those are my general thoughts.
