The Rise of Nostalgia Content and Distaste For Current Tech/Life

I don't know if anyone has noticed this too, but I have had a lot of youtube videos recommended to me that focus on technology and the Internet then (like. early 2000s-2010s) vs. how it is now, frutiger aero + frutiger metro, etc, and other nostalgia-focused content lately...

A lot of it focuses on how technology and the Internet nowadays not only is ugly and frustrating as all hell to use, but also feels more like a chore or something you *have* to do rather than something that is useful to you and is enjoyable (like it was then).

I feel like an uptick in these videos (and the re-emergence of aesthetics like fruitger aero and a love for older technology, especially ones that are single-use like the iPod) is because the Internet and tech in general now is filled with ads, algorithms, AI, and a lot of other awful stuff, and that the Internet is mostly just a few sites run by major corporations for profit - which sounds like a very obvious observation, I know, but I also feel like it is because all of it has made technology and the online world so much more inefficent. (by the way, why do laptops come with 4935823289 forms of bloatware the second you open em right out of the box? Believe me, no one is using most of the apps there )

I also think that it is because we are increasingly becoming more aware of how these things impact us and our daily lives and kind of. yearn? for a more simple time where these things weren't as much of an issue... Buttttt I think partially there's a case to be made about romanticizing the past too ^^; (i.e. "aesthetic" unboxing videos of flip phones, iPods, PSPs, etc, and some nostalgiacore tiktoks to an extent)

What do you think?

ur rite!!! ur v rite!!

Iv lit got an iPod & planning 2 get a flipphone so iv
watched alot ov vidz talking abt this, n it generally seems to b a huge mix of
dissatisfaction w the direction of tech and a yearn 2 go back 2 ur youth/b4 u
were born.

alot of ppl tend 2 say this isnt tha internet they were
promised when they were younger, being online is bcomin more like a requirement
than smthn 2 do 4 fun. ppl comparing being online 2 bein @ a mall.

i get it, tech is bcomin more "how do we get ppl
addicted the fastest, how do we maximise profits" than pushing the limits
and testing new things (see: the evolution of the phone. the variation of
flipphones in the 00s and even iPhones in the 10s v how they all r now)

which is tru, u can c it in tha rise of AI and evrythin bcomin more centralised
and owned by like 7 companies who r all tryin 2 appease advertisers.

however it was... also like that back then!! (see: the
halloween documents, evrythin Apple has evr done evr)
. companies have never
not been obsessed w/ maximising profits and getting return customers, but ppl r
v much aware of it now and seeing it bcome more transparent.

but there was alot more freedom back then. like luk @
myspace profiles and fansites. alot more ppl seemed 2 kno html n css n there
was customisation!!! Ppl cud do what they wanted online. Which. Double edge
sword lmao but it I think ppl miss it bc theres so many restrictions n censors
nowadays that u cant do much if it isn’t glazin the us govt or sum shit.

ppl js wanna go back 2 a simpler time but does that mean the
00s or does that mean their youth yk?

srry if this makes nooo sense <//3 i hear abt this topic n i blk out

i agree that tech nowadays tends to be too boring, lifeless and featureless. for example, if you look at laptops from the early 00s, they have so many ports and lots of things were replaceable/upgradable, but now they have barely any ports and look boring, i got a chromebook for free (i wouldnt buy it with money) and it has ONE usb port, ONE usb port and a microsd slot, what a joke.

this also goes for things like branding and adverts too, logos used to have character and be nice to look at, now theyre flat, squared off and lack any kind of life to it, also adverts used to be interesting to watch and billboard adverts looked nicer too

i am also getting into old tech mainly because of my curiousity of how things were like back then, i have lots of different dvds of windows versions, also floppy disks etc

but we also shouldnt forget that those times (90s/00s), that people are starting to idealise, didnt come with its issues like nowadays, we may feel that things were probably easier and better back then because things were simpler, and it probably was a better time (i wasnt there), but it wasnt a trouble-free time

but yes, it feels like corporations are trying to pry into our lives more just so they can sell you things or sell your data to dodgy vendors, theres just too much noise

It's definitely a combination of rose-colored glasses and a longing for something we never truly lived through. Being born in 05, I caught the tail end of the era without smart devices, and I agree that it was "better" in one way: Things felt more genuine. Actions had weight, entertainment had value. There was no mindless hypnosis by a phone app for 3 hours that leaves you feeling like crap. The internet was something that lived in a white box in its own room, not something that was attached to you at all times like an organ. People back then had their own issues, and of course likely felt the same about the decade before theirs as we do for the 2000s, but I think the constant presence of technology in our lives has not been for the better. My cat litter box does not need a phone app that requests location, storage, and microphone access. Rant over, all we can do is recognize the current state of things and work to return to a less instant society.
