I don't know if anyone has noticed this too, but I have had a lot of youtube videos recommended to me that focus on technology and the Internet then (like. early 2000s-2010s) vs. how it is now, frutiger aero + frutiger metro, etc, and other nostalgia-focused content lately...
A lot of it focuses on how technology and the Internet nowadays not only is ugly and frustrating as all hell to use, but also feels more like a chore or something you *have* to do rather than something that is useful to you and is enjoyable (like it was then).
I feel like an uptick in these videos (and the re-emergence of aesthetics like fruitger aero and a love for older technology, especially ones that are single-use like the iPod) is because the Internet and tech in general now is filled with ads, algorithms, AI, and a lot of other awful stuff, and that the Internet is mostly just a few sites run by major corporations for profit - which sounds like a very obvious observation, I know, but I also feel like it is because all of it has made technology and the online world so much more inefficent. (by the way, why do laptops come with 4935823289 forms of bloatware the second you open em right out of the box? Believe me, no one is using most of the apps there )
I also think that it is because we are increasingly becoming more aware of how these things impact us and our daily lives and kind of. yearn? for a more simple time where these things weren't as much of an issue... Buttttt I think partially there's a case to be made about romanticizing the past too ^^; (i.e. "aesthetic" unboxing videos of flip phones, iPods, PSPs, etc, and some nostalgiacore tiktoks to an extent)
What do you think?
