I hate sm when people say that Nu-metal isn’t real metal. Just because its not traditional and typically isn’t as heavy as black metal or sludge metal for example, doesn’t mean its not metal. Nu metal started in the mainstream primarily with Korn who got their sound from Mr Bungle. Korn popped out with a sound that was heavily influenced by 80’s and 90’s rap/hip hop and combined that with a funk metal sound that was relatively unheard of in traditional metal. Other bands started to come out with a sound that was similar to Korn’s but most bands decided to lean more to either metal or rap while still maintaining a balance. Bands like limp bizkit decided to lean more towards the hip-hop/rap influence, while bands like system of a down leaned more towards a metal sound, although both artists would do collaborations with both rap and traditional metal artists. Nu metal does have a unique instrumental sound just like every metal subgenre. It typically uses funk inspired guitar riffs that are simplified, while also rarely having guitar solos. The vocals are also generally melodic and energetic. Overall nu metal is just as valid of a metal subgenre as alternative metal or industrial metal (or any other metal subgenre obv).
