I would say one of my hot takes is that Subarus are actually pretty reliable cars. Even the WRX is pretty reliable, especially any Subaru that has a newer FA or FB engine. The main reason I feel these cars get such a bad rap is because a lot of owners don't do any preventative maintenance, they beat the living piss out of them and are surprised when something goes wrong.
I have a 17 Impreza hatch and it's been incredibly reliable for me. Just don't miss your oil changes and change the transmission fluid and front/rear differential fluid every 30-40k miles. Do preventative maintenance along the way, don't wait until something major blows out. Spending $200 on maintenance now can prevent a $2500 repair down the line.
Although, I'm going to have to disagree with you on the FRS/BRZ/86 thing. I personally think they're pretty good looking cars, and have you driven one? Before my Impreza I had a 2013 Scion FR-S and I loved that thing to death. I wish I never had to sell it, it's one of the best handling cars you can get into for under $10k nowadays with a clean title. The FA20 is lethargic from stock, there's no denying that. But the whole point of the platform is like how the old S13s and 350z's were, they are a blank canvas meant for you to modify. Throw on a quality set of UEL headers, intake, cat delete, and a half decent tune, and the car really opens up and the torque dip is almost entirely eliminated.
