I made my site using neocities which has this cool little function where you can browse the sites that others have uploaded. I took a lot of inspiration from what I saw there. With actually coding, it was a lot of trial and error to see what looked good and I'm pretty happy with how mine turned out. I used liveweave as it shows changes as you add / delete stuff as well as W3 Schools which is a really good guide for clueless people like me.

seconding w3schools - it's such an invaluable resource
also i do a lot of profile design on desktop using notepad
making a locally stored html page is good to practice :D
