I played The Ouroboros King a while back. It's a chess roguelike that follows King Octavius as he goes on a quest to slay the three Witches who have taken over his Kingdom. It was pretty neat, but it made me want to try making one of my own.

Introducing:

Caissa's Crusaders!

It's a chess RPG with similar vibes to Shin Megami Tensei and similar plot elements to Yu-Gi-Oh!. The current story I have so far revolves around the nation of Staunton, a peaceful theocracy ruled over by the goddess Caissa. In Staunton, people are religiously honor-bound to accept any chess challenge issued to them. Then one day, the meteor "Chaturanga" comes crashing to earth. Scientists find that it's made of a mineral known as "Carlsenium", which has unusual properties such as causing chess pieces to mutate into new shapes and gain sentience. A new age of playing chess begins, but not everything is sunshine and rainbows, because a gang of chess terrorists known as "Zugzwang" began using the Carlsenium-enhanced pieces to steal the souls of those they defeated in battle. The protagonist must aid his newfound partner, a Knight named Carrot, as they venture to get to the bottom of Zugzwang's evil plans.

In terms of gameplay, I've drawn up about a hundred or so pieces and counting. You can view all of them, as well as their movement patterns, here.

I've also made a mockup of the title screen, which you can view here. (The full game will be in something more powerful, this is just the mockup)
