for me its kinda difficult to point a finger that easly....but i guess one of my go to for any day is lamb of god,pantera,or black sabath..
what about yours?

cant pin point to a top 1 more like a top 1 of each subgenres like
pleymo for nu metal
sepultura for groove
sodom for thrash
napalm death for grindcore
cannibal corpse for death
acid bath for sludge
iron maiden for heavy
but tbh i still cant fingerout a number 1 band CUZ THEY ALL SO GOOD

If i had to choose maybe i'd say Megadeth or Kittie. Emperor get an honorable mention too
