You Don’t Have to Be "Emo" to Enjoy Emo Things

I’m not emo, but I really enjoy emo music, the style, the people, and the overall community. There’s nothing wrong with that. Just because I don't look emo doesn’t mean I can’t love the same things people in the emo community do.

I'm tired of seeing people get mad over this online. For the record almost everyone wasn't emo at some point — and when they first got into the music and the scene, they probably didn’t look emo either. So why gatekeep it? It’s just stupid.

For the record, I don’t personally identify as "emo" — I just really enjoy emo, and that should be enough.

I heavily agree with this statement. A lot of people forgot that a lot of music genres aren’t just styles and aesthetics. I personally consider myself to be emo: it’s a music based subculture and I listen to the music. I don’t really dress “emo” though. 

I feel like a lot of people who gate-keep this way are the kind who also have an obsession with calling everyone a poser to hide that they’re a poser themselves.
