Is Tumblr Worth It? Any Alternatives?

My bulletin post regarding this topic would be gone. I reposted here for longevity, but might delete it soon too.

I heard from so many people that it's chill now. I want to... I'm tempted... But, I'm really anxious with the type of people there. They are, after all, the origins of the loud twitter stereotype after the so-called Tumblr Exodus.

What I mostly do is going to blog a very niche indie game I liked, but it might attract an unwanted crowd.

If I you think I'm not fit to have a Tumblr account, could you suggest any alternative? I've got a Dreamwidth page. I might sign-up for DeviantArt just for the blogging and status update. Any site that allows NSFW topics? Like, the topic in question are mature subjects, not necessarily porn games per say. I just hate censorious sites.

Addendum: Some comments say it's worth it since those people flock on twitter now, and some still think it's pretty radiant with extremist weirdos that survived the purge. Of course, I'm not expecting any NSFW artists there... that's not my reason I wanted it to be there. I need a site where I post a piece of my mind that allows NSFWish topics without getting the hammer.

Maybe it's a skill issue that I'm unable to curate my feed the way I wanted it. But, that's how I am. I am tired of fandom slapfights and I just wanted to follow a fellow or fan without heavyhanded politics and nonsense, instead just talk about the dang thing we both have MUTUAL INTEREST in. It's why I'm so afraid to talk about a topic I liked and is considered my comfort "thing" to anyone.

Can't say I know of an alternative other than maybe LiveJournal or some other blogging service (or even just a personal site). I can tell you that Tumblr is basically like every other social media site, it's just that its users like to pretend it's special.

RE: Carboniferous

Yeah, I'd reckon it's that case. I might just end up going to LiveJournal instead. I did have an account on Dreamwidth which was a LiveJournal clone and I mostly post my dream journals there but keep it SFW even if I have opportunities to age gate posts.

I've used Tumblr as my primary social media since I first got access to the internet in 7th grade, so about 7 years now. I joined around the time of the great tumblr exodus, I remember how everyone was gonna "boycott" tumblr because of the nsfw rule change. Anyway point is I've been on there constantly for a long time and pretty much exclusively since the twitter migration happened. I am also very big into fandom culture and always have been. I have never had any experiences of politics and toxicity invading fan culture like with what I've heard is present on twitter. Toxicity on tumblr isn't really prevalent and its super easy to avoid and ignore, the vast majority of the time its just chill fandom stuff and people talking about their interests. Many tumblr users actively want to avoid bringing the old toxicity back and strongly discourage that type of behavior on the platform. It also allows for a lot of the same customization that Spacehey does for your profile page. Its as far as I've experienced an enjoyable social/fandom platform and I think you would like it alright. Not sure if I was any help but I hope this answers your question some what.ദ്ദി(• ˕ •マ.ᐟ

I enjoy Tumblr, but I also am mostly a reblog account. I don't really have any personally-made content, so our experiences would be vastly different.

However, I can say that if you want a quiet existence, then don't really tag your stuff. If there's no tags or sparse tags, it doesn't really show up in feeds. Conversely, Tumblr now has "Communities" (Groups) that a person has to be a part of to comment on things, so if you're worried about randos finding your stuff, see if you can find a niche Community to be a part of. Or possibly start your own, so that you can control your exposure.

There's some gung-ho OpInIoN pricks and toxic Ship Captains on there (but I mostly experience them in the Hazbin fandom), but no one really comes after anyone with the Ban Hammer. Again, I am not a content creator, so my experience is going to be drastically different.

NSFW content is all relative, honestly. Words and descriptors don't really have to be censored, some images might need a blur bar over pieces, and yet, I somehow keep getting full frontal porn bots in my feed.... >_>

Tumblr seems scary, but you can find some of the nicest people there, and it has the chance to become a lot more of a social group, than a social media circle-jerk like, say, Meta or Twitter.

I say give it a go, but work on your personal blog on the side, just in case you're not comfortable with it.

I run under the same name, more or less, if you want a friend.

hello! i’d say tumblr is still worth it. it’s very easy to curate your dashboard. blocking certain tags and users allows you to keep the vibe good lol! i’ve had a very good experience on tumblr — everyone was just so excited to talk with each other about shows/movies/books/comics and share their fanstuff . i recommend it wholeheartedly! ^^

been on tumblr for a while now and iz very much a kinda curate-your-own kinda deal . the people you deal with is up to you . functionally, i think its fine, and the new shity desktop layout meant to mimic twitter haz multiple browser pluginz 2 replace it 2 how it should be .

tags being a seperate block from the main post is awesome, character limits youre unlikely to ever hit is great . asks r fun too . but staff iz notably biased, transmisogyny plaguing moderation decisions, dozenz of trans women having accountz purged 4 tha sin of a completely clothes and sfw selfie . makes for a hostile experience . if you happen to get shadowbanned, you cant reply to posts, you dont appear in other peoples notifications, and cant send (or recieve, depending on platform) asks . takes a while to get them to fix this, i imagine even moreso now that the staff haz been majorly cut down .

honestly ? im only still there cauze ive met awesome people on there i refuse 2 leave behind rotting in my discord dms or simply never contact made outside tumblr . as much as i love the formfactor, i cant really recommend it .
