App fatigue

I'm tired of apps and just want to browse the web freely within a browser.  But it seems like everything is apps these days.  Even when I stubbornly navigate to the website instead of opening the app, it prompts me to download or open the app for that website.  I think it's because an app is an owned space where everything you see is under that company's control.

Has anybody else noticed this and maybe felt like the apps are taking over a bit?

I have many grievances with this one.

Especially with video game and program supports. Everything has to be sigining into their X / Bluesky account or joining their Discord server to find updates and patches. Very few indie games I'm following host their own website and even then they forced me to sign in their Blogger page because it's a for mature audience game that gatekeeps the kiddies out.

Like, bro, put your repos on github. I don't want to hear your sob stories through X / Bluesky and do your damn job fixing these issues!

Yuppp hate that. Especially since oftentimes, the app functionality is much more limited than that of the website! OfferUp, a platform similar to Facebook Marketplace, is one example. On the website, you can filter by category, check out sellers you're subscribed to, to name a couple - none of that is available on the app, you're just given "the feed" of what the app thinks you'll like. It's like the purpose of the app is not to make your experience easier, but to make it more dependent on what the company wants for you. Like, spare me

i read somewhere that it's bc it's easier for them to spy on you through the app than through websites
which makes sense because a browser can have tracker/ad blockers and delete cookies
meanwhile an app can't
i've noticed plex for one keeps pushing their app & it's really annoying
i usually use the site in-browser unless i have to (since they hide certain features unless you use the app)
and even when i do use the app, i sandbox it
