The Russians can definitely write; I have a proclivity toward the French, which is mostly, I'm sure, some kind of Stockholm Syndrome from learning the language in school for eight years, but I don't think I've ever read a Russian novel that was not objectively speaking wonderfully written. Dostoyevsky is probably my favorite, but I know a lot of people really swear by Tolstoy.

Russian literature is wonderfully capable of showing their raw and cold winters with emotion in their books. Dostoevsky is by far the most proeminent one in his country and I am in the opinion that he deserves such position; everyone should read "White Nights" atleast once in theirs lifetime.

Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy are deservedly acclaimed as among the greatest novelists of all time. I haven't read in Russian lit outside of them but they are sufficient. I think Tolstoy's Anna Karenina is the greatest novel I've read. Tolstoy understood human nature better than anyone I feel.
