How to start listening to Metal (Or how not to get tired of it if you like other musical genres)

One thing I hear a lot of people say is that Extreme Metal is "repetitive," and those people are wrong, but for someone with a more superficial view, I recommend Mathcore. I consider it the most creative subgenre of metal, and it is quite underrated. The albums from this genre that I recommend are: Bless The Martyr And Kiss The Child - Norma Jean, Nightmare - Architects, Jane Doe - Converge, Danza II: Electric Boogaloo - The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, and others (I don't know much about underground Mathcore).

Now, for those who enjoy something melodic, I recommend Heavy Metal, Doom Metal, Stoner Metal, Speed Metal, some Thrash bands like Metallica, Power Metal, and Progressive Metal. Now, the Heavy Metal albums I recommend would be: Give' Em Hell - Witchfynde, Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (also Doom Metal and the first Heavy Metal album), Orgasmatron - Motorhead (also Speed Metal), Restless and Wild - Accept, Court in the Act - Satan, Ride The Lightning - Metallica (I don't like them, but it's a light and melodic Thrash album) and others.

I don't like Power Metal, Progressive Metal, and maybe Stoner as well, I don't know much about traditional Doom Metal, but for those who want to find Power Metal bands, the German scene is quite rich in that regard.

Now, for those who want melody and weight, I recommend Thrash Metal (like Venom and Kreator), Groove Metal, Melodic Death Metal, DSBM, Melodic Black Metal, and Metalcore. First of all, when searching for Metalcore, use the title "Metallic Hardcore" because bands that sound more Pop than Metal might show up, and they don't have much weight. Metallic Hardcore is the original name for Metalcore, but today it is used to differentiate bands with clean vocals from those without clean vocals. Metalcore bands have clean vocals, and Metallic Hardcore bands are those that do not. Another thing, Nu Metal is not mentioned here because it has many elements from other genres, such as Rap, Industrial, and also uses synthesizers, electronics, and more grooves, plus the genre does not use growls (yes, what Corey Taylor does is not a growl). I do not recommend Nu Metal (I have nothing against Nu Metal fans). Now, I will talk about Thrash Metal albums: Welcome To Hell - Venom (The first Thrash album, a lot of people still debate whether this album is Black Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, or NWOBHM, but I consider it Thrash Metal and many people/music sites do too), Extreme Agression - Kreator, Darkness Descend - Dark Angel, Alice In Hell - Annihilator, Evil In The Night - Merciless Death and others (I love Thrash Metal). Now, for Groove Metal, I would recommend: Crown Of Phantoms - Chimaira, Cowboys From Hell - Pantera (ignore the Phil controversies), New American Gospel - Lamb Of God and others. For DSBM, I recommend: Depressivos Hinos Suicidas - Funesto (It's a Brazilian band that sings in Portuguese and my favorite DSBM band), Autumn - ColdWorld, Reflections Of Sad Soul - Nocturnal Depression, Defeated By Life - Happy Days (I love this band), Cruelty Of Darkness - Dépressive. Just listen to DSBM, this genre is so good and amazing! No irony, it cheers me up during moments of loneliness. Ok, now for Melodic Black Metal or Melodic Death Metal, I don't have much, since they are genres I haven't listened to much. Now the Metalcore albums will be: Bloodwork - Texas In July, God Is War - All Pigs Must Die, Different Shade Of Blue - Knocked Loose, Dying Before The First Stop - Broken Promises, Some of Us May Never See the World - On Broken Wings (if you don't mind the occasional small clean vocal), As Feridas da Consciência - Unearth, Destroy The Machines - Earth Crises and others.

Now, for those who want something heavy but still have a limit, I recommend Grindcore, RAW Black Metal, Traditional Black Metal, any subgenre of Death Metal, except Technical Brutal Death Metal and Slammi Slamming Brutal Death Metal, any subgenre of Deathcore with excessive Brutal Deathcore, Technical Deathcore, and Slam Deathcore, Sludge, and Thall. Albums? Search for them, they are great genres for you to explore on your own and find the bands you will enjoy the most.

Now, for the extreme of the extreme and my favorite subgenres, listen to Slamming Brutal Death Metal, Goregrind, Pornogrind, Deathgrind, Technical Deathgrind, Old School Goregrind, Brutal Deathcore, Slam Deathcore, Technical Deathcore, Technical Brutal Death Metal, and War Metal/Bestial Black Metal. These are great to explore, and there are several masterpieces here.

That's it. If you're coming from another light genre like Pop or Hard Rock, depending on your expectations, you have 2 options: if you want something light, listen to Motorhead, Black Sabbath, and Diamond Head; if you want growls, listen to Venom, Kreator (they don't use growls, but they are heavy), Bathory, Possessed, Napalm Death, Anal Cunt, Embodyment (First Album), Knocked Loose, Unearth, Chimaira, and Sepultura. If you are Emo (there are many here on this site) and want to migrate to Metal, if you are more Emo Mall, listen to Honey This Mirror Isn' Big Enough For Two Of Us, Bury Me In Black, and Our Lady Of Sorrows from My Chemical Romance. They are heavy and help create a base for what you'll have to handle listening to, even though My Chemical Romance is a Post-Hardcore band and not Emo, just to clarify. After you listen to and get used to these songs, listen to Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, Earth Crisis, Kreator, Venom, and other Thrash Metal bands (don’t listen to Metallica, Anthrax, and Toxik, they are too soft). When this sound becomes light for you, move on to heavier genres. Now, if you're a real Emo who listens to things like Emocore, Midwest Emo, and Screamo, you have 3 options: if you listen to Midwest Emo, listen to Ambient Black Metal, DSBM, Doom Metal, and Post Black Metal. Yes, they are heavy too, but they are melodically instrumental. The same goes for goths who want to listen to Metal. Now, for those who listen to Emocore, like Rites Of Spring (the only band I know, but I don’t like anything Emo, just to make it clear), listen to Doom Metal, Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, and Thrash Metal (don’t listen to Metallica, Anthrax, and Toxik, they are too soft). Now, if you listen to Screamo, listen to Grindcore, DSBM, Metallic Hardcore, Mathcore, Traditional Black Metal, Thrash Metal, and Melodic Death Metal. Once you find that light, move to heavier genres. This was my explanation, just clarifying once again that I don't like gothic or emo bands. I have nothing against them, but this was just a guide to listening to metal. I hope you enjoyed it. Listen to Metal, and don’t let Ozzy see bats!
