I’m a new driver and only just started driving in real traffic in my partner’s car. What are some tips you can give to autistic drivers on staying focuses, overcorrecting, making quick decisions, or establishing routines?

honestly, practice is the best way. start on really low-travel roads and ofc with good weather, but the more you do it, the better it will go.

keep a safe distance, and i know its hard for you guys but please try to not overthink, and try looking long ahead of the road, for most people that causes some sort of psychological effect that keeps the car still in the road lanes

It’s great that you’re starting your driving journey! Here are a few tips for autistic drivers:

  • Stay Focused: Limit distractions, take breaks if needed, and use visual or sensory reminders to stay calm.

  • Avoid Overcorrecting: Practice gentle steering and correct smoothly. Start in quiet areas to build confidence.

  • Quick Decisions: Look ahead to anticipate situations, and check mirrors often to stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Establish Routines: Set a consistent driving schedule and create a pre-drive checklist for calmness.
