I've been looking into this, you need a LOT. Basically first you need you radio licens, and in getting this license it will teach you a lot about how radio operates, what bands are legal, because what you are about to do is techinically illegal, you just need to get not in deep water when you do it. Now that we covered that, you need to start pushing the underground station. Not to hard that it gets too popular and record labels start sueing for copyright, just enough for me to tune in. :) there's a lot of brocast equipment, some people build their own towers, other people pay others to use their towers I'm not too too sure on the exact equptment

Either way, ya you need to contact the FCC. As for equipment You'll need a transmitter, antenna, sound equipment, and a space to house your equipment. Either way its very much made for the rich and lucky. You kinda make yourself a target by having a 50ft andtenna in your backyard, plus the costs of keeping it up and the radiation poisoning for keeping it on. Of course you can bypass the whole FCC thing, but you then have yo go into hiding from the government because god forbid anyone in the middle class try and prodcast public messages

but i guess what i'm wondering is; i've seen a few people open up internet-radio stations, where they just use chains of programs to go manage songs, go live and broadcast that way, and that seems easier? it doesn't seem like sammyx86 (either no longer on here or under a different name) needed a 50 ft tower to broadcast their Neil Cicierega

and they seemed like they were doing it for free, too, using their own knowledge & free programs, none of those corpo progs with pricing plans that milk you for all you're worth

So if you want to do an internet radio station the go to software for it is icecast.
VLC supports the ice cast protocol. So if all you are looking for is to play songs to the internet, put a bunch of songs into vlc and follow this guide to cast it. https://archive.flossmanuals.net/vlc/streaming-to-icecast.html

Also this is a decent article on how to do this. https://medium.com/@coffmans/simple-media-streaming-with-vlc-and-icecast-d4e4016f4813

If you are looking to broadcast on FM really all you need is a cheap FM transmitter. If you want to get range the antenna will need to be high up but would violate laws. Most off the shelf ones without good antenna placement will cover about the area of a highschool, but if you get that sucker high up can cover miles with just a few watts, but would be illegal.
