It really depends inf you're talking like, CHILD child or early teen? When I think about the books I loved in like, elementary school, we're talking Encyclopedia Horrifica, Whisper of Death/Chain Letter 2 by Christopher Pike, the Sammy Keyes books, Malice by Chris Wooding... if we go up to like, fourteen years old, I'm deep into Stephen King by then.

Oh, yeah, there is one - Real horror stories by Sergei Sedov.

As a kid I was left alone in a library a lot and for some reason I always liked to rummage through horror sections. That's when I first encountered it. Then I forgot about it and after a while I've been trying to find it and... eventually I did.

I love the urban legend feel, the way it features cursed video-games, and secret TV channels, scared me SO MUCH as a kid. They all kinda silly now though.

I guess the thing that unnerved me the most at the time is that all these stories could easily have happened in my hometown.

books that have really stuck with me and that I still enjoy reading from time to time:

tbh, I don’t think you’re ever 'too old' for any book! You can always find a piece of yourself between the pages of the books you loved when you were younger.

the book that got stayed with me the most is "where the red fern grows" by wilson rawls - picked it up off the bookshelf in the classroom thinking it was just a story about dogs. i guess i was half right, but i absolutely ended up holding back tears in the middle of the classroom lmao.

some honorable mentions are 'the hobbit' and 'the lion, the witch and the wardrobe' (specifically).

when i was a little kid i read The Wonder of Charlie Anne by Kimberly Newton Fusco and LOVED it. it's pretty short but it's a cute one. i also adored the School of Good and Evil series as a little worm, and Hitchhiker's Guide helped form my humor at around that time lol
