Forum: Life

Im 16 and i live in Asia, in a small country in a small crowded boring town, but i like to watch America movies and everytime after i watched them , i was like: oh my god when??

How long i need to wait for those cool adventures??

There's no abandoned house here, and my friends are living in the city, and they're not that kind of people

I feel so lonely and boring, because i need to do what normal teenagers do , i need to explore abandoned houses, i need to sneaking out in the middle of the night with my buddies! But i dont have both

Every Saturday and Sunday, i just laying in bed , thinking about how cool my life could be if I dont live here

I think about running away but i can't leave my family behind, i can't leave my mom alone in this place and suffering

I am from the USA, but I'm very much a rule follower and never did the things I saw in movies. Instead, I like to do things that feel the same to me but smaller. I sit outside and watch the wind or rain in the middle of the night, or I ride my bike alone to the store with music in my earbuds, or I scrapbook with magazines in a book nobody else will see. I go to local festivals, bake bread and walk it to my neighbor's house, have weekly movie dates with myself (even just at home), swim in the creek in summer, read books outside, try new crafts just for fun. There are lots of things to make my life more romantic that don't rely on having risk-taking friends.

It also helps that a lot of the charm of these American teen movies is the small town setting. Everywhere in the world has small towns, and every small town has charm if you imagine how a movie would depict it. If you find little things in your week that can be imagined to be special, it can start to actually feel special, especially when you think about the things your town has that other towns or other countries don't. I promise American small towns do not feel like the movies unless you imagine it. Except maybe backyard campfires. But even things as American as county fairs and high school football only feel romantic if you imagine it that way.

Some movies that changed my perspective on romanticism of location and lifestyle: Call Me By Your Name, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, Song of the Sea, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Sing Street, Boyhood, Over the Garden Wall, Super 8

I hope any of this helps, but I also know that a lot of my feelings came with time and with being away from home long enough to notice what mattered to me when I got back. I started feeling almost patriotic about my local restaurants, the creeks and rivers I know, my local library, when my town actually gets wind, big raindrops instead of light misty rain, trees that change with the seasons, snowstorms and icy roads, having windows open in any weather, the wildlife native to only my area, our local holiday festival, covered bridges, fall markets. Things I knew I loved but didn't attribute to my town until I started trying to make my life feel more romantic. I hope you are able to find those things for your life.
