honestly i have so many words about this, apologies in advance lol. don't get me wrong, i love it, but considering it was written by one single guy, it's got a lot of flaws. one that's always bugged me is the foreshadowing in episode 1, when sal is talking to dr. enon and dr. enon says "i don't believe you're a killer, sal," and sal responds "you might be the only one." the problem with that is that it's directly implying sal didn't kill anyone, but that's not true. he did. he killed everyone in the apartments, so this feels like borderline false foreshadowing to me? like he had good reasons to do it, he was mercy killing them and not just killing them in cold blood, but he still did it, and he did it in an incredibly violent way (i.e. cutting out people's eyes, stabbing people in the face, etc). he could've done a stab to the heart for everyone and been done with it, but he chose to be way more violent than necessary when killing everyone and i can't imagine that helped his case during the trial lol. it is an interesting detail that he chose to kill people that way, though, i think the fact that he's generally a very sweet and peaceful person, yet went to mercy-kill people in incredibly vicious and violent ways says a lot about his character, and the kinds of things that he might be hiding from the people he cares about.
the pacing in general is a big one for me as well, especially in episode 5. the way sal/ash/larry all go from planning a night together to having larry commit suicide out of nowhere is incredibly jarring. i also understand that gabry was probably going for somewhat of a greek tragedy kind of story by killing off all the main characters, but imo it just kind of made for a rather unsatisfying and bizarre ending. i get that gabry plans to make more sally face games, but as it stands right now, it's just not a satisfying ending no matter what way you look at it.
and i can't mention criticizing the game without bringing up all the bizarre and frankly unnecessary lore involving native american people. i get that he wanted the cult to be very old and tied with the very foundations of america in order to justify how large and powerful they are, but i feel like bringing in indigenous peoples the way it's done in this game, intentionally or not, ends up kind of making native american people part of the villains of the story by tying them so closely to the devourers of god, and having that be your only representation of native americans in the story, it just feels very uncomfortable. i feel like having native american people being so close to the story like that doesn't really add or change much, and that you could write this story without making native americans part of the villain group and not much about the story itself would change. this is mostly background lore right now, and not super relevant to the surface plot of the game. not to mention the native american people are also potentially part wolf-people? what's going on there, lol.
like i said, i really do love this game and its characters. i don't criticize because i hate, i criticize because i want to see better stuff from the devs i like. gabry has a lot of potential because this game was an incredible task for someone to take on their own, and it's incredibly ambitious--one of the highest compliments i think can be given to any creator. i want to see more of what gabry does with this universe he's created, but it'd be remiss not to bring up how weird and borderline racist the native american lore in this game is lol.
sorry i can't pick one thing i'd like to change, i like this game too much to only have one thing to criticize about it.
