So i've had a theory for a while and I want to know other YTTD fans opinions.
TLDR: I believe there's a chance the Midori you kill in the Banquet isn't the "real Midori", or a fake Midori will appear in the next chapter.
During part 1, you go on a long quest as Keiji to build a doppelganger of Midori under the belief that if a Floor Master sees their doppelganger, they will die. Safalin shows Keiji, Mai and Q-Taro the body of Midori that is being built but is missing his head; the head can be found with Maple in the gallery. After Keiji receives Midori's head, he goes on an expedition to charge Midori's head — he is attempting to bring life to the Midori doppelganger that Safalin is building to have Midori come into contact with it and have him die. Keiji successfully charges Midori's head despite having turmoil with Kurumada.
But after this, the side quest of Midori's doppelganger and bringing it to life seems to just... vanish from the plot (unless I missed something).
If I am correct in that it vanishes from the plot, then I find that to be quite odd. During the Banquet you're sort of lead on to believe the one in the coffin as a spare is the Midori doll, but it's actually the real Q-Taro, so it leaves me to question 'where did the Midori doppelganger go?'
Considering it's been proven Midori is part human and part doll, I think it is reasonable to believe that Midori seeing a doppelganger of himself wouldn't kill him, as it'd have be self-inflicted, which he could choose to just not do. If I recall correctly too, there isn't a case in the game where a Floor master dies from seeing their doppelganger, so it could easily be a fake rule, or rather it applies specifically to the ones that are dolls (so Rio Ranger).
So I'm wondering if Safalin might've informed Midori about how they've built the doppelganger, leading Midori to swap himself with the doll, with that one being the one that enters the coffin. Or maybe even if he swapped himself early, it could've been the doppelganger that Maple had attacked instead. My other idea is it was the real Midori that went into the coffin and died, however because that doppelganger was built, there's now room for a complete-doll version of Midori to appear in the next chapter.
The main reason I believe he isn't entirely gone, whether that's the real him or doll, is because his story ends abruptly. You never find out the connections the dolls have to Midori, as well as Midori's general association with ASUNARO and why he works there, his goals, his backstory (aside from what little we know from Shin). I feel like there's more to be known, which could be shown without him being alive in some form I suppose.
Somebody in the YTTD server also proposed a theory I didn't think of, but it's basically that since there's a fully charged doll of Midori, they believe Midori may be rebooted to be interrogated and asked questions, which could be interesting too.
