Hi! I’d recommend starting out with bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Venom, Motörhead, etc. You can also find a lot of new music by just going to the “fans also like” section on a band’s Spotify page and just clicking around. There’s also a great video by Madi Danger called Intro To Metal (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gZkNL-5r4BI) which I think you should definitely watch. Btw if you want recommendations for heavier or more obscure metal bands lmk

As for learning about the history of the subculture itself, there are plenty of documentaries out there about different genres and bands. One of my favs is called Murder in the Front Row and it’s about the beginning of the Bay Area thrash scene (you can find it on youtube for free I think)

There’s also a website called Map of Metal which has a lot of info about different subgenres.

Also, if you like System of a Down and Slipknot you should definitely check out Get Some by Snot. I think you might also enjoy Entombed’s Wolverine Blues. :)

There's a documentary called Metal: A Headbanger's Journey that does a decent job of kinda summing up the history of Metal. The same people behind that one also made another documentary called Global Metal which is an interesting highlight of bands and scenes from different places in the world as well as a series called Metal Evolution (which I wasnt personally a huge fan of but if you just want to get to know a bit more about bands, genres etc then its a decent starter). I dont know if they are available on any streaming platforms but they shouldnt be hard to find otherwise.

For history of metal, they've already covered what needs to be covered.  I'd also look up the progression from Elf to Dio, how the thrash look evolved, and subgenres, how to tell them apart, all the way from hair to black metal/death metal/extreme

and listen to me, ok, don't let some douchebro who only listens to 3 extreme metal bands tell you what you're listening to isn't metal. If it abides The Rule and is heavy, fuck it, it's metal.

If you want, get you a vest.  That's the best way overall to showcase what you're into.  It's not just for thrash anymore and you can also put your favorite shows and other pop culture things on there.  Try to keep it balanced between bands and everything else though, or it'll look more like a fashion piece than a metal vest.

Hope I could help \m/

You can put patches/pins on pretty much any jacket if you want, doesnt have to be a vest. Doesnt have to be a jacket either for that matter, you can do bags, pants, hats. If it works it works.
