Use firefox and install ublock origin to forget about ads forever. Also works on mobile. If you watch youtube on your phone download revanced and get youtube from there: no more ads even on mobile

I second using uBlock Origin.ย  I recently had about a week where I had to disable it otherwise videos would stop playing 1 minute in.ย  It seems to be fixed now, which is just as well since that was a week of hell!ย  I don't know how people put up with YouTube video ads (often the same ones over and over again), it's worse than on TV.ย  At least on broadcast television they pick a natural break in a show to do an ad segment, not an ad every 2 mimnutes.

On mobile there is also the Mull (Firefox based) browser.ย  I think it comes with uBlock Origin installed, if not it can be added, but I think it's just there as standard.

Pi-Hole is another awesome tool for blocking ads and malicious URLs on your network, though I never figured out how to get it to stop YouTube ads, hence my use of uBlock Origin.

I used to have an adblocker but so many sites can detect now. My main problem recently is how unregulated they are. I was checking Letterboxd and I got a borderline explicit ad, and I sometimes hide my screen from people behind me don't see the ads when I'm scrolling on Politico!? Anyone can put anything on a reputable site these days and its so bad.

Yup, some sites will try to get you to disable your ad blocker, but then have no problem showing you ads with content like that or even worse, malware.ย ย

The model of sites paying for themselves through advertising has problems and could do with being replaced with something better.

*Just uses adblocker*

Now, more seriously, the fact adblockers are needed and even exist is already worrying. They exist only because websites put invasive ads.

If every ad was non-invasive, there would be no poing in blocking them. Hey, just like in physical newspapers. They have ads, but do it *right*, so nobody needs to complain and everyone is happy.

Many sites depend on the money ads give them, FYI. But they put them really badly.

Small ads in the margin are successful.ย Big ads in a popup are not.

A good example is Neocities sites with "johnvertisements" (a free "ad" that links to whatever site and usually has a funny image) at the bottom. Usually people visiting the site click them. Pretty unlike sites with actual ads that put them so that you cannot read the site.

EDIT: Also, if your site blocks adblockers, you are also doing it wrong (looking at you, YouTube)

I imagine back in the early days of printed ads in newspapers and magazines that when colour became available as an option some advertisers went for it, despite what back then must have been great cost.ย  After that I imagine most companies would have felt they had to have their ads in colour to not get left behind.

After that I suppose next levels might have been holograms, those leaflets which fall out of your publication (the equivalent of pop-up ads, but in print), coupons, small sampler products such as perfume and so on.

It seems like what on-line adverts do is down to what is possible with the technology.ย  If newspapers and magazines could monitor which articles you read, which other newspapers and magazines you bought and track their location and report back to the publisher, they probably would!
