Everything feels so shallow

Something I feel as the internet has grown is how shallow and surface level everything has become, especially in terms of posting art and engaging in fandom. I was a prominent dA artist in my early teens, I loved the sense of community and different means of communication the site offered. People were so enthusiastic about things, even really stupid things like hating wolves....?

I made my best friends on dA, making gift art and getting paragraph long replies pointing out every small detail they notice. The only resemblance you can get from that is Tumblr, somewhat. A different format, but I found a way to connect with people on there through fandoms, which is nice, but not the same. I miss art being more than just likes and shares, I miss people searching endlessly for fanart of their obscure interest and being able to find something from 2 years back. Now it's just bots on top of bots.

I hate Twitter and I hate Instagram, I hate what they have done to young artists. I hate the lack of community and vitriol that has sprung up in recent years. It's frustrating.

FUCK Wix for ruining the site that formed my childhood. Fuck Elongated Muskrat. I never liked Instagram but fuck you whoever owns it, I can't keep track.

Sorry if this isn't really the theme of the group, but this has bothered me for so long.

I agree. I feel as though the creation and coupling of instagram (and other social media) with the ability to get paid to be a content creator who gets money from partnerships and brands to sell a lifestyle, products, or concept is what really made this grand shift. It's capitalism, AI,  and algorithms pushing what is popular and what sells. The selling of ideas and aesthetics to people has made social media more of a constant ad. It has made people more apt to engage with the social media for instant gratification and vanity than looking for connection and community via things like art and music. Not that it does not exist, but it is hard to find due to what I believe is the aforementioned social media norms.
