what would an alien see when they look down?

idk i pulled this out my ass because it's 2AM and I'm bored. :_)

What Happened Down There?

Don't ask me where,

Why, I mean Earth of course,

The land of the free.

I heard it was once a beauty,

Full of life and peace.

I wonder...

I wonder....

What happened down there?

This is not what the stories tell,

Of vast green,

And deep seas,

Of icebergs as tall as rockets,

And life as far as the eye can reach.

Please, I ought to know,

What happened down there?

In the land of the free,

Where dreams were meant to be,

Now shadows linger endlessly,

A tale of woe for all to see.

All that is left,

Is a barren waste.

What is this? - I truly don't mean,

To devastate, but please,

What happened down there?

The air is crisp,

The green is brown,

The water is dark, - Are those mountains of art or of waste, a frown?

Rising high, like mockeries of pride,

Yet they crumble with time, as nature collides.

Is this what remains of a world once grand?

A place of wonder, shaped by hand,

Now torn asunder, by choices made,

The echoes of greed, the price we’ve paid.

What happened down there?

I need to know,

Is there still hope, can it regrow?

Will the shadows give way to light?

Or was their greed too much...

Lost a losing fight?

The dread of ecological deterioration and eventual collapse is something that has loomed over my head for awhile now. As someone who is so desperately in love with all things nature, the idea that things are decaying, withering away into less grand versions of what they were before, it's devastating. I want the world to exist in all its glory and be alive to see as much of it as I can. I relate and connect with your poem a lot. Nice writing!
