language learning

is there a language you're currently learning? and if so, is it just for your own enjoyment, or is there a different reason? :))

I had german classes in every single school since elementary school, so it's been like more than 10 years already... but I never paid much attention to the language at the time and did not learn much, although I would get good grades.

In my second year of uni I started taking it more seriously and I'm now at, I would say, A2-B1 level. I'm definitely better at understanding the language than actually speaking it, but I'm hoping to improve!

I wouldn't say I've really seriously gotten into it yet but I would love to learn Hindi and Russian in the future. Hindi's script is so fascinating to me and I think the different word order would be a fun challenge. For Russian honestly the history of the USSR really interests me and it would be neat to be able to learn more about it by being able to understand the language :D

Good luck on learning German!!

Thank you!! I also had a short phase about learning russian but all I learned is how to read Cyrillic, I didn't learn actual words or phrases lol Still, learning to read might be somewhat useful because my language and russian have some similarities in vocabulary :D

I also wish you the best of luck!

kinda? xD
well i know polish and english cuz i'm from poland and grew up with english being spoken too. i've been learning german in school since year 7 (so since 2018) due to it being forced by the school system here, but despite that i genuinely like german and learning it. only issue is that some of the grammatical rules just don't sit in my brain. I'm in university now and i don't really keep up with it but it's more out of exhaustion than not wanting to learn the language

apart from that i've had moments in my life where i've sporadically learnt languages and then dropped them after a few days. examples being dutch, hebrew, korean, romanian.. yeah my untreated adhd is showing XD

yes! I avidly study spanish! I'm B2 now after 6 months of study, and am adding Chinese as my back burner language to learn passively. Learning language can be so discouraging sometimes for me though since reaching intermediate plateau.

Yeah!! I'm studying Japanese, I tried in the past and gave up but I'm making another effort.

It's more for my own enjoyment and improving my memory skills :)

Still very much a beginner though!!

I’ve always thought one of the coolest parts of learning a language is how it lets you step into an entirely different way of expressing emotions. For example, when I started exploring Arabic, I realized how rich and poetic the romantic expressions are compared to English or German. That curiosity led me to look up some arabic romantic words , and I actually found a list of phrases that felt super authentic and meaningful. Using them not only made my study sessions more fun, but also gave me small cultural insights that textbooks usually miss. It’s these little discoveries that keep me motivated whenever the grammar gets tough.

  • I’d love to, but I feel like I’m just not capable of learning languages at all. Nothing sticks. Even though I tried learning both with tutors and on my own. Basically, it just doesn’t work. Maybe I just don’t have the type of mind you need for this.

I somehow think that there’s no such thing as a special type of mind, and it’s all just a common stereotype or even just an excuse to justify yourself. Although in reality there’s even a dlab practice test that checks a person’s potential for learning foreign languages, and that test is prep for the dlab exam, which is considered really hard. But I still think that anyone can learn anything when there’s a goal, motivation, and later discipline.
