I'm currently trying to work in veterinary medicine. I got my vet assistant certificates from two different schools and am currently going to school to be a vet tech. The only frustrating part is I can't seem to get hired for any vet assisting jobs. All the job listings require you to have at least a year or two of experience of that profession. How am I supposed to get experience if no one will hire me :(

Vet student/ long-time (unlicensed) vet tech here. Depending on the area you are in some places will be less picky about the experience that you have. As cool as the vet assistant certificate programs are, they unfortunately do not hold a lot of weight when it comes to applications since there is no legal title protection or licensing board for vet assistants, only for technicians. If even the vet assistant jobs in your area are seemingly competitive, try applying for jobs that are aimed more at being a kennel assistant and you can usually find your way into more roles through that position, eventually becoming more of a tech than a vet assistant or kennel assistant. Some places will not let you do much and relegate you to cleaning cages, and other places will let you learn as much as you want even letting you learn how to intubate animals and monitor anesthesia and the like. Depending on your comfortability with learning that sort of thing on the job, those positions are great for gaining that experience. Feel free to message me (if you can, idk what this site allows for I literally just made my account) if you have more questions.
