My mother is a non denominational Christian minister. While I am not Christian myself my take on it is yes, Christianity is a religion. Saying Christianity is about a relationship with God makes any theistic religion count as Christianity.

I believe the definition of a Christian is someone who follows the teachings of Jesus religiously. I do not believe that a Christian even needs to believe in a god.

I'm not Christian (I used to be), but I have family who is Christian. In my opinion it can definitely be both. Following the teachings of Jesus, building a relationship with God, etc. It's a religion, but that's because most branches teach belief in God and building a relationship.

Organized religion unfortunately ends up scrapping a lot of what Jesus taught.
