Just a reminder that your local library is an amazing resource! Also, Amazon Prime is free for many groups! This book is free to us through Amazon Prime, and we are planning to check out the rest of the series as we go.

Here is information and a summary of the book:

Genre: Fiction, Fantasy

“For people who want to enjoy an intriguing, fast-paced novel, Harry Potter, and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the perfect book to read. It keeps you involved throughout the book as most chapters have cliffhangers at the end. This novel is the first of the seven famous Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling.

The book is about 11-year-old Harry Potter, who receives a letter saying that he is invited to attend Hogwarts, a school of witchcraft and wizardry. He then learns that a powerful wizard and his minions are after the sorcerer’s stone that will make this evil wizard immortal and undefeatable.”

Ch. Disc.; 1 & 2

I feel like I need to preface that I have read the Harry Potter series a few times. Each time, it has comforted me in a unique way. I am overly excited to read it again, as an adult, with my best friend. Also, to physically document it here!

To start with, Chapter One of Sorcerer’s Stone is one of my favorites. It is so nostalgic and mystical; it touches a sweet spot in my heart. I adore how it started with Professor McGonagall staring down Mr. Dursley. Rest in peace beautiful Maggie Smith.

This time around reading, I noticed a few things I have not thought about. First, when McGonagall is questioning Dumbledore, it gives some insight into the war. She is doubtful of it being over. How she gathers information is reminiscent of how characters exchange information between allies later in the series.

Secondly, I appreciate how the series opened with the only perspective we get from the Dursleys.  I feel like this is a perfect transition from the world we know into the Wizarding World. It also shows how there is magic in human intuition, as Mr. Dursley was thinking of the long-forgotten Potters all day.

Finally, I must point out how sweet it was reading Hagrid sobbing while handing over baby Harry.

Chapter Two, to me, lays the groundwork for the rest of the series to begin. It introduces his magic and gives explanations of Harry’s life up until this point. Also, where we find out Harry can talk to snakes!

I loved and thoroughly enjoyed starting this book again. Again, it is so comforting to me because of how nostalgic and magically it is written. The Wizarding World awaits, and I am excited to jump back in.

Chapter Discussion: One & Two

hello everyone! today we will be discussing chapter's one and two from the book listed above! please adhere to the book club rules for discussions (will be listed above and in separate forum).

the club is always evolving so feel free to add your own flare/twists to your headers and replies!

now time to get into the chapters! to start this off, i love how the first chapter begins.

seeing the world through dursley's eyes, mcgonagall waiting outside the dursley home in cat form, and dumbledor, hagrid, and mcgonagall delivering baby potter to the resident. just chef's kiss.

chapter 2 introduced some heavy themes.

we truly get to see the neglect that harry faced for the last 10 years and how his day-to-day life and relationships were effected by it. I enjoyed reading this chapter as bringing awareness to topics like these is very important and beneficial to all.

I also enjoyed the zoo scene. harry's interaction with the snake was exhilarating (and hilarious) and as someone who has seen the movies but hasn't read the books i also loved the foreshadowing at the end of this chapter.

over all i'm super excited for this series! these first two chapters really pull the reader in which is always good with any book.

@Vista

No need to apologize! Do not feel like you need to engage in any content not for you! This is a safe place.

We will be reading plenty of other books!

@luvagrl

I agree Chapter 1 is chef's kiss. I know I have said it a thousand times, but I love the introduction of these characters.

Thank you so much for touching on how serious the topics are in Chapter 2. I completely brushed over this because I was aware how bad his home life was. Reading your perspective made me realize they do not express this in the movies. It was intense and gives a lot of insight into Harry as a character. I do not want to go too far into the series, but just from the movies we can see how much of a drive this is for him.

I am so excited to read your thoughts as we get deeper into the series.
