i finished Dracula by Bram Stoker a few days ago, and today I finished Carmilla by Sheridan le Fanu.Β

I really enjoyed both, which didn't surprise me since I have always loved vampires and stuff anyway, so i was already a bit biased. it was my first time reading Dracula so i was actually a bit surprised to find out most of the plot wasn't actually in Dracula's castle but i really liked how the story progressed, although i can't tell how serious it was supposed to be because honestly i found how it was written to just be quite funny.Β

Carmilla was a bit more serious but it was kinda confusing like I feel like i didn't know as much as i should of at times but it was still really enjoyable. idk who names their kid Mircalla or whatever though lmao

Carmilla is pretty similar though a lot shorter so the plot is simpler for sure. It has the same kind of deceit and questioning of sanity you see in dracula between the characters so i would definitely give it a try if you're loving dracula ^^

This is an old post ik, but I agree about Carmilla, it was quite confusing. The whole time I had no clue what was going on and I read it about a year ago. I tried reading it again recently hoping to come back to understanding more, but I just couldn't. It's a weird genre, weird narrative. A lot of gothic literature from that time period is like that. The Castle of Otranto was extremely confusing too, and it's supposedly the first book published in the gothic genre ...
