I've been wanting to get into metal for a while now, but it's incredibly vast and I'm a bit overwhelmed. What are some good metal bands for someone who usually listens to alt rock and emo?

Honestly, just find what interests you!! My personal fav are Metallica and Megadeath, but its such a vast genre that I can see where it would be difficult to start. If Metallica interests you for example see what bands may have opened for them and go from there!! :)

You just gotta find a genre that interests you in my opinion, I listen to a lot of Power Metal like Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce, Enforcer, etc. But I'll listen to a lot of different genres its just that I have one main genre I listen to

Hey welcome to the show!

I primarily find myself drawn to powermetal, powerthrash, tradheavy, newheavy, trad-death, thrash, and hair metal (DON'T JUDGE ME, else you take dishonor on your House!)

But, as I have a number of metal friends, it's possible that you want to start with In This Moment, Dir En Gray, The Pretty Reckless, and maybe Falling in Reverse.  I've heard most of these bands, and I agree they both have metal elements and emo/alt elements.

Personally I started off with rap music then went to trap metal and ultimately listened to more and more metal. Start off with some trap metal artist like City Morgue, scarlxrd, and Kamaara, then start transitioning into artist like Slipknot, I prevail, and Slaughter to Prevail.

Slipknot (and nu-metal in general) is probably one of the best things to start with, just experiment with a bit of of every genre and find what you like. Slayer is what really got me into the heavier side. another good thing to do is look for some metal shows near you, its a great way to get exposure to the scene and discover new bands :3
