I was going to say Dungeon meshi, then stopped wanting to say dungeon meshi when you mentioned Ito.
Then i remember the 2nd half of the story. Maybe it will scratch the itch? Its also just a really good manga.

The Drifting Classroom is a classic horror manga that predates Ito. I would definitely recommend it
