What's spachey's opinion on being open source / federated

Forum: SpaceHey

I wanted to know what An thinks about open sourcing spacehey / federating it (although I am not entirely sure if mastodon's protocol would support such myspace inspired spacehey , but lemmy (federated reddit) and mastodon have been connected in some sense by the federated protocol)

also federating spacehey , could make it much easier for people to self host for their own specific community (instead of having discourse / flarum)

I wanted to know what the community thinks about this approach

Problem is, ActivityPub is kind of a lie. It's really just a framework for making protocols that aren't really interoperable. Lemmy and company can barely talk to Mastodon, and when that happens the mismatch is obvious. PeerTube needs WebTorrent support to work at all; you can't simply embed a video elsewhere. And I'm not sure what PixelFed is doing, but I never see people sharing posts from there.

Also, any ActivityPub server needs absurd amounts of storage and CPU to work. SpaceHey is already under a lot of stress.

Edit: maybe if you could use SpaceHey to pull in RSS feeds from elsewhere. Most parts of the website export them. It would make sense to go both ways.

Replying to nosycat , Okay maybe agreed about federated part , but what about open sourcing it , if somebody really wants to federate it , then they have the capability to do so.

(Edit: how to reply to a certain person , I don't see a way to do so )

That assumes the software behind SpaceHey lends itself to being installed elsewhere. Having the source is not enough. And then, sure, someone else could add ActivityPub support in theory... assuming it can work.

(On the forum you can't reply, there's not even a quote feature.)
