dumbphones & other 'old' technology

for those who don't know, a dumbphone (also known as a feature phone) is a dumbed-down smartphone. compared to a smartphone, dumbphones can range from only really having a few features that are basically essential in this day & age, like calls/texting (i.e., a nokia 3300), to being almost as smart as a regular smartphone. (i.e., a samsung galaxy folder)

having a dumbphone can help with 'unplugging' your mind, so to speak, like if you're struggling with social media/general internet addiction--though, a lot of people also get one for the aesthetics or nostalgia. for whatever reason someone may have, it feels like there's been an uprise in people who own and use some sort of dumber phone.

is it just me, or do i feel like older technology is becoming trendier? for more examples, people buying digicams, people with ps vitas/psps and ds/3ds, even people buying older laptops. (mostly for the aesthetic, lol) i'm all for it though!!

i've been considering buying a keitai for myself, what do you guys think?

Yeah I've honestly been meaning to unplug for a while just genuinely cuz I wanted to focus on my hobbies than my phone, so I deleted all mainstream social medias. I kept xiaohongshu that is a Chinese social media app and on there it's extremely popular to collect old flip phones like the docomo and the Aquos that are also becoming popular in the west. I think people miss the time where tech wasn't so clean and it was just something fun you could own and it could also bring you style. I've been thinking on switching to the samsung folder 2 but im too lazy to cut my SIM card.

I'm pretty sure that a feature phone is quite distinct from a smart phone.  I believe the fairly basic operating system actually runs on the modem chipset, whereas smartphones have an entirely separate computer to run their OS, but it can (of course) control the modem to make calls and so on.  There might well be new phones being sold as 'dumb phones' which architecturally are actually smart phones, just made to be more limited.  Whether any of that means anything in simplifying your life, I don't know.  Probably not!

All that to one side, I do like the idea of having a separate music player, camera and so on, not making your phone your everything and something you can't be without.

One thing to be aware of if thinking about buying old phones; in some parts of the world 2G and 3G is getting decommissioned.  I think where I am 3G is mostly gone if not entirely gone.  2G is still about and will be for a few more years.  I suspect they were more keen to re-purpose the more valuable 3G frequencies than the 2G ones, but they'll get switched off at some point too, unless there's a massive resurgence in the use of 2G, maybe then they'd postpone the switch off.

I personal have a keitai myself! A Sharp Aquos 601sh, to be specific! I love this rise in older technology! Growing up, my parents were very strict on study. I only had a flip phone, as it meant I couldn't procrastinate on the internet all day. In school, everyone around me had the latest iPhone or some other fancy gadget, and on the train, everyone was glued to their screen! It made me really sad. Why can't we all just appreciate life and live in the moment a little more? My current phone, the keitai I previously mentioned, is super convenient! I can access the usual apps nowadays, Line, TikTok, the likes, but there's just something so satisfying and nostalgic about pressing a nice keypad! I have a mini cassette player, too! Super cute. (。•̀ᴗ-)✧ I think we were born in the wrong generation, sometimes.

I'm worried this old tech trend is just that, another trend. The risk of people getting bored of old tech and switching back to their toy smart phones is too high. Praying that this "trend" is permanent!

As someone who's been through the evolution of phones from "dumb" to smart, I have to say that I would personally never go back to how it was. It might sound cool in theory, but in reality it was very tedious to have to have everything separate (phone, music player, camera, etc).

I enjoy having a phone that can do almost anything I need. I've also never really had a problem with getting addicted to social medias, so I don't feel like having a new phone is that bad for me either.

However I'm a sucker for old stuff, so I own a fair bit of old technology. I just don't use it (´ー`)

If I would mention something that I miss about old phones, it's the quality and compactness. New phones are too fragile and big to carry around comfortably.

i'm genuinely considering chucking my smartphone in the nearest body of water and getting a flip-phone. all i need is calls/texts and music. only thing i'm concerned about is the amount of things that "require" apps; i'm in college and even doing my laundry means installing a useless piece of software.

I've definitely noticed an uprise in dumbphones, and I totally support it no matter the cause, whether it be for the aesthetic, nostalgia, or unplugging. I have a flip phone, but I ain't set up the plan yet. Right now I currently use my smartphone with essential apps and minimal distractions.

Dumbphones are "smartphones" now?!
Back in my day... wait any cell phone was advance back then.
But when dumbphones started to be a thing, they where literally just normal cell phones (Flip Phones) that could only function as a phone (+text)

I still keep a Nokia 6620 from 2005, it works quite well except it having only 3G networks. But I don't mind, I've started to become less dependant on my smartphone and using a dumbphone once in a while is really refreshing. I can do the rest of things on my laptop, or at the computer room at my university

I also wish public phone cabins returned to my city (somehow), there's only 2 left here in Santiago, Chile nowadays :(

I've been trying to find a good condition iPod so I can listen to my own music and not rely on Spotify or my Phone. I have purchased a PSP and 3DS this year and enjoyed them both quite a bit, but haven't used them too much since I don't really travel.

A 'dumbphone' is something I've been desiring for a long time too. My main concern is that an older phone may not work with a modern SIM card or our Cell networks. I know there's a handful of fliphones around, usually for older individuals. I would really enjoy one with a full keyboard like a Blackberry!

If anyone has 'dumbphone' recommendations that work with modern SIM cards and Cell networks, please let me know!

The dumbphone was great- sadly I message my friends on messenger apps (discord, whatsapp, fb messenger, etc) so it was a bit counter intuitive. I ended up just having to set app limits and delete all scrolling social media apps
