Character and story creation

So I need help. I love drawing and making OCs for future stories or cosplays but i have some big issues.

1- I have too many character ideas

2- I can't stick to a design and storyline

3- art block kicks in

It is so hard to enjoy making characters because I'm so focused on a story or what they would look like then I think too far ahead. After awhile art block has me in a chokehold and I just scrap the idea. Then the cycle repeats! I have so many ideas but I already have many OCs, some I don't even draw anymore, so instead of breaking down my ideas and making multiple characters I try to cram many ideas into one.... Yeah it rarely works out.

What should I do?

i love making ocs!! heres what i try to do:

- when i make a new storyline, i always make the main ocs first and give them central character traits
- after that, i think of plot points i WANT to happen and plot points that make the most sense narratively and try to get the best of both worlds!
- sometimes i make """noncanon ocs""" that i just make for fun even if it really wouldnt make sense in the story so i have complete creativity and it wont affect the story at all!!! its like making aus, which i highly recommend. very very fun.
- if i have any extra ideas, i write them down on my notes app in case i ever want to make an oc with those traits or want to give an oc those traits

feel free to dm me if u want to share more though! i love hearing about other peoples ocs and seeing their art :3 im sure its amazing!!!

If I’m making stories for myself I usually just let my imagination run freely with my OCs and don’t really focus on having a “good” story as it is more of an escapism fantasy.

However if I’m making a story to post somewhere or for other people to read for any reason i try to first focus on the message I want the story to have: some moral dilemma, some life lesson, some kind of joke, some outlet for something traumatic, something uplifting? After I have that I try to see if any of the OCs I already have could fit the theme and then I work from there. I usually try to make sure the story has a rough start, conflict and ending and then I try to flesh out the personalities of the characters and the relationship dynamics between them.

At that stage I try to imagine the characters as real people interacting with each other and follow the main plot I have set out for them. I will change the plot according to the changes the characters might make based off of their dynamics but still make sure the final message stays somewhat intact and if it doesn’t work out I just change the message.

Sorry for I yapped too much _(┐「ε:)_
