Forum: Reclaiming the Internet Group

Webrings are a fantastic concept that could be incredibly fun with the right group of people. With the effort of reclaiming the old internet what do you think about the probability of this being commonplace again?

It already is, on Neocities and other small web communities. But frankly I never cared for webrings. Why should I visit some random site with no context. Link pages and directories, sure, that's different.

@NosyCat I see what you mean, although I feel it would create a stronger sense of community for the people in them but not much for those out of the loop :>

I always thought that they had a nice quirk, but I don't believe they will happen for bigger sites.

@Mvvv: They are button links that take you to other sites which also have your embed leading to your site on it.

i love webrings since they well, help you get lost in the web going from site to site, but yeah i do think we need even *more* lol

@EnderCatCore That's exactly what I love, the getting lost aspect lol, but you're right they tend to be a little too niche

im trying to join a webring!!!! I find them SUPER interesting and cool and I love to be able to find out about different websites I would never have found on a search engine, especially niche sites and personal blog style ones. It reminds me of how Amino was in a way, and I really really miss having such a unique way of interacting with other people who are so much more similar to you than you would find on traditional social media.

I hope they get a lot more popular again because I think it's so much more interesting than anything you could do on any other media, because of the endless amount of possibilities of what to code and do and you don't really have to talk to someone to find something to add, you can just add whatever you want and then tell people about it and I LOVE that

So how do these work? You have a topic and multiple peoples' personal sites that are just their individual take on said topic? If you had 6 people on a ring they just each have their own page/site to express their thoughts on the matter instead of all doing it in a single forum or whatever?

I was never really into webrings. They're cool and all, but for me, most of the time I'm only interested in one website in a webring.

I couldn't imagine joining one though. I wouldn't ever have that kind of commitment to something so fragile that it could collapse in on itself the moment one member goes rogue.

If they do come back, it'll just be a fad started by people excited to be in a webring before they realise how much commitment and "hoping-your-friend-isnt-a-fucking-pedo" praying it really takes. Just like AOL IM revivals.

It made sense back in the day where everyone had their own little website, forum, or customized pages. Because of that, you had some options on who to include in your webring. But that's kind of a lost art nowadays. These days webrings wouldn't make much sense, though I'd love to see their return.

I'm not old enough to have seen webrings active in the first place (at least not that I remember), but I've seen them a lot in old websites while exploring them in the present, and I definitely think it's good way to find other similar sites.

I would say that how useful the webring is for me depends on what it is about though... I might not want to see the sites of everyone who likes a certain band for example, since not all of the sites might have a lot to do with the band. But if it's a webring about, say, a particular fashion style (that all the members dress in), it might be more useful to me.

I do however think the whole point of webrings is to find random sites within a certain interest, so those who don't like random probably won't like webrings (^^;)
