I read Lolita a long time ago but I just finished re-reading it and something a bit odd stuck out to me.
1. Delores was giving Humbert hints ALL ALONG but he was just oblivious, and so were we. However, Nabokov's also brilliant in the art of subtlety, and distraction. Like how, for example throughout the story Delores is displayed as promiscuous and show somewhat of an attraction for Humbert when in reality it could have been completely different. Ive seen some people speculate online that Delores was drugged the entire time, or perhaps because Humbert was technically telling this story he was twisting to seem as though he was "seduced".
2. We never truly know where Clare comes from, which left my speculating that he wasn't truly meant be a character. What I mean by this is that maybe Clare was (although completely present within the book) somehow an analogy for something. As we know Clare was somehow present the whole story, but when Humbert first takes notice of him its right after they begin traveling again so Humbert can "have her". So what if Clare really represents some kind of dark fantasy of Humberts instead, something that's always been there, but slowly began to come to the surface, eventually taking him over.
I don know those are just my two cents, I want to know what anyone else has noticed or maybe input on my idea.
