anyone got tips on how to avoid being sucked into social media?!!!

hey guysss!!

i'm a newbie here so don't mind that please. I accidentally stumbled across this group but I was so happy that I did cause I absolutely hate modern media. While watching tiktoks/ instagram reels, I can feel my brain cells rotting away, but it is sooooo addicting. I also have adhd so it is really hard to find something that is equally stimulating for me.

what are y'all's tips on staying away from rabbit holes like reels/tiktoks/shorts (idk you name it) or what actually stimulating things to do instead of watching them???

it might sound overboard, but if you don't have anything else keepin you on em (like friends etc.) just delete em. if you wanna go an extra mile, change your password to something you won't remember easily and lock yourself out. sure you can do password recovery later on but adding the extra step makes it easier to keep your brain disconnected from em.

i have adhd too so i definitely get what you mean about needing that stimulation. i like scrolling my tumblr dash but i keep it chronological only so once i've caught up, i've caught up yk? i also play a lot of video games which keeps my brain busy when i have nothing better to do (and even when i do but that's a separate problem lmao)

Maybe ask yourself what you use these things for.  If it's just for a laugh or to amuse yourself maybe get rid of it, or at the very least only allow yourself so many minutes per day or per week on it.  There's more content in the world than you could possibly consume in many lifetimes, if you're trying to keep up with it all you'd be as well travelling towards the horizon.

If it's to learn something, that's better at least, but also probably best limit your time on it to particular hours and stick to that.

If it's to stay in touch with friends maybe agree on a messenger to use instead of social media.

If you're looking for something social that will keep your brain engaged have you thought about things like HAM radio, CB radio or Meshtastic?  Random suggestion I know, but it's networking without the internet.

I might have a very stupid tip.

at the time of the pandemic, I couldn't stand the internet anymore. But at the same time, I was afraid of missing out on the "good" internet, i.e. the memes and funny stuff.

I said to myself "I'm gonna uninstall the social media apps from my phone for 1 week and I'm gonna go on internet but just on the computer and maybe just the evening and so I will go "on" the internet and then I go "out" (like we used to do when the internet was a place and not everywhere)".

and in fact, I realized that, nothing changes. Its ok. I haven't missed a thing. A week later, I might have had some cool stuff, but it didn't matter. You know what I mean? I was afraid that for 1 week I'd miss a lot of stuff, but in fact, you don't miss anything, nothing happens, everything's fine.

I don't know, this realization helped me somehow.

Self-discipline is important and not just on that matter.

I'm not perfect, but I can give you some tips I tried.

1. Limitation. The more you expose yourself to the source of your problem, the more you will be consumed by it. Reduce the amount of time you spend looking at it.

2. TikTok has some real privacy issues and is probably spyware. Uninstall it or use it sensibly on another device;

3. Short videos are the worst type of video for someone with ADHD. Try to watch longer videos about topics you enjoy.

4. If you are on a PC, install the Unhook extension (for Chromium-based browsers and Mozilla, I think). It will unhook your youtube from any distraction you want. --> I use it to hide the home feed, live chat, shorts, etc... you can even hide comments.

5. If you're using your phone, I think there's an option to limit your app usage. You can also just hide your phone and go do something else for a few minutes and then come back.

6. Find a hobby. Don't just watch these short videos, try other things and focus on them. You can even do this on your PC or phone. On your PC, look for quizzes, read some short stories, find new search engines and explore the hidden parts of the web. Play some games, experiment with different software (like Google Earth or Stellarium). Use MS Paint and draw something, then post it on spacehey or somewhere and see what people think. I don't know... just some suggestions.

I hope this has helped in some way.

self control and attention span is something that you need to work on to get rid of addiction, but sometimes you can't help it. i recommend adding downtimes to your phone so you can only have an hour daily of screen time. something that helped me is beat addiction with addiction. for example, instead of being on instagram, i go and play padel for hours. notice that when you go and do exercise you feel better than rotting away in your phone??

personally i am also going through the same things where i find myself addicted. What i have been considering is buying a flip phone and a cheap phone plan and an MP3 player for when im out of the house. That way i only use a phone to text friends and just listen to music and leave the social media for when im home or on my computer

Delete it, and I think some parental controls control which apps you could download, so you could set parental controls for yourself and prevent yourself from downloading them again.

Just remember that those social media companies don't view you as a person, only as a product for advertisement companies. and just delete all of your socials, not only that most of the people there are just bots, but Meta is fucking training their AI on our posts.

so yes, leave social media, so we can watch those companies burn to the ground; cause a business is nothing without it's customers.

It would be funny if a bunch of people made AI bots to go on Facebook and they trained on what Facebook's AI was posting and Facebook's AI was training on what a bunch of user's AIs were posting and it was just bots talking to bots and no actual people, but Facebook didn't know it.

I once heard about a strategy (can't remember the name) about adding extra steps to the things that you want to evade. Some other comments also say this, but for example, changing the password of your social media. Sure, you can recover them whenever you want, but adding that extra step to watching reels or tiktok can make you don't want to do it at all and take you to doing other things. It's all about making the things you want to evade harder, and the rest easy (like going for a walk, or doing homework).

You can search it on youtube for a more detailed explanation, but I think it's pretty useful. You can also invest yourself on other activities that could get you to do them more often, like learning some new skill or to practice something.
