instragram selling artwork to ai

i was planning to post my artwork on instagram to build up my portfolio and be Professional and all that

and then i learned they sold out to ai generators. millions of peoples photos and artwork were taken without consent for ai generators. idk what to even say or do. its like artists dont have any rights anymore

so im no longer posting art on insta. does anyone have advice on posting art on spacehey, and what groups to check out?

i think the best spot would be your own personal blogs or posting them in the art forum page. I dont think groups are active enough for that type of content

Are you aware of Pixelfed?  I can't say I have any experience with it, I just know it's a decentralised and federated alternative to IG, part of the fediverse.

Does anyone know if AI trainers scrape only sites which say they do it on content uploaded, or do some of them do it on the internet as a whole?  If it's the latter you may not be safe posting anywhere!  At least if you post to a site that doesn't have you agree to it in their terms then you have a leg to stand on if someone does use your work for training.  But then again, how would you know?  It's a pickle.  Best to not outright consent to it in the first place non the less.

There are platforms such as Pixiset and Pic-Time for not only posting your work but to allow people to order prints and the platform handles all the payment, printing and order fulfilment on the back end.  The two I mentioned are aimed at photographers, perhaps they'll do art too, if not I'm sure there is an equivalent in the art world.

You should probably make your own site in addition to anything else at some point.

Same here. I used to post lots of arts on IG and now i don't feel comfortable at all with all the AI stuff.

I'm posting more on twitter and there is this "new" app called Cara that seems to be antiAI. I hope it works for you

DA got in some hot water with their use of AI so i'd stay away from them these days. they used to be cool but they're pretty garbage now. tumblr's a pretty visual platform that hasn't sold their soul so that could be a good option maybe? even if you make it private just for keeping everything together for your own sake

if you really wanna be old skool about it tho you could always make a neocities page and build up a portfolio there. like virtual insanity said, i dunno if that would necessarily make you immune from data scraping tho. i think the only thing you can do for that would be watermarks over the actual core part of the piece which kinda sucks to do. a legal disclaimer on your page might help saying you outright don't consent but i dunno how well that'd hold up legally.

feels fuckin awful tryna be creative on the web these days. i wish you luck with whatever you decide to do! most important thing is don't stop creating!

I'm pretty sure disclaimer would be the wrong word, but I get what you mean.  Whatever the proper term is it wouldn't do any harm to point out that you do not consent to your work being scanned by AI or reproduced without your agreement, something along those lines.

I recently watched an interesting video on cassette tapes, sounds like physical media is making a bit of a comeback (not just cassettes) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSBQC85ZLEE&t=658s

I know you're talking about posting your stuff on-line, but how much thought have you given to printing and more direct local engagement?  With so much stuff in the on-line world I wonder what the effect has been for various real life groups / clubs.

Every company is selling user data and other stuff to AI. Nothing new.

Just switch to Tumblr

The first thing that comes to mind are those arts and crafts fairs.  What shared studio / maker spaces do you have in your area?  Even if you don't need a workspace, if there's one of those of those spaces in your area which maybe has a potter, a jeweller, a glass blower etc. ask them where they sell their stuff IRL.  Doesn't have to be the same field as you to be helpful.

Are there any businesses in your area which would make a good place to hang your art for sale?  I've been in coffee shops before where the art on the wall was for sale.  If it's the sort of material that would fit in with the venue and the owner benefits from it decorating the place while it's waiting to sell then he gets a cut of the sale when it goes, that could be good.  That would get lots of eyeballs on it too.

I don't know what the town you live in is like, are there summer gallas there or in neighbouring towns?

For this reason I'm starting to not post on insta.

But I found Cara and it's almost a heaven for artists

You won't have to fear any AI sh!t because the creator was at the head of 2 mass lawsuits against companies using AI like that, literally against Google and other massive companies like that

PS: If you give it a chance, you can find me as @musgoquimerico if you follow me I'll surely follow you back, I love seeing the artwork of other people

i live in a city where there's a thriving art community, there's art fairs and murals, and various independent businesses that showcase local art. should i give them a shot in showcasing my tallents? @ virtual insanity

I think so LOTUS_START.  If a venue isn't into your work (and I have no idea what your work is like) don't take it personally and move onto the next place.  They have their business to run and if your work doesn't fit in with their vision for their business it's maybe nothing to do with how good or bad your work is and all about what fits in to their venue.  It might even be a good idea to deliberately approach businesses you think are less likely to be interested and practice pitching to them before doing the businesses you feel more confidant about.

Do you have a clear idea on pricing and what deals you'd want to make or decline?  If a business shows interest you'll probably want to know that beforehand rather than be be caught out!

i'm solid on my pricing since i've been doing commissions for years, but stuck on what deals to make for local businesses. what are the most common types of services that artists do for small businesses? so i can get a concept of where i want to start with this side career of mine
