modern flip phones and rejecting modern social media

hello! i absolutely despise modern social media and honestly only use it to talk to my friends. the only thing i do anymore is get sucked into rabbit holes and feel horrible. (╥_╥)

i was responding to one of my friends bullitien boards about possibly getting themself a smart flip phone and i gave some advice. i looked in deeper and found the ever so lovely samsung g160n. (⌐■_■)

it has the modern capabilities of any smartphone (social media, sms, apps, etc) but has a flip phone look. due to the screen being very small and the speed being not so good when it comes to apps i thought it would be perfect to not be on modern apps to much. (¬‿¬)

it can still handle MY basics (youtube, pinterest, spacehey, and insta (for friends)) but will make browsing social media difficult, forcing me to go to the computer for that and God knows how awful apps are on a browser. (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

i thought it would really aid in my quest to focus on other things such as gaming or going out more, i might buy one soon! (ง'̀-'́)ง

posting this here just to hear your guy's opinoins and also make others aware who might find this useful!

much love xx ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Come on, my classmates are very addicted to cell phones and social networks, I seem to be the only one who doesn't, and well, that has an explanation, because my cell phone is very bad, it is a 2015 model, more specifically a HUAWEI-LUA-U23, and in fact for some reason the Play Store does not work, the only thing I have "useful" is the camera and Chrome,  although the version of Chrome that this mobile has is one from 2015, an old one, in fact with a design like this, "retro" style, lol, a somewhat great error, but at the same time something horrible, since when I try to enter the SpaceHey in Chrome it tells me that it is an unsafe page, and when I try to go to the site,  the images don't load me, I mean the profile photos don't load me, the resources, the icons, emojis, NOTHING, it's horrible, the camera is only useful to record some of my adventures at school, although of course, the camera is disgusting... but I still love my cell phone very much...

"and God knows how awful apps are on a browser"

I've heard people say that this is deliberate because they want you to use their app instead of the browser because it allows them to collect more data on you than they can through the browser.  Sounds about right.

Generic_Dev, sounds like your phones web browser is so old it's probably full of unpatched security holes.  I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure people who are would urge you to not use such an out of date browser, particularly for anything you sign into.

In the dark days of dial-up using the internet might be charged by the minute and it tied up the landline, so before always-on broadband connections it was more common to go on-line to do some specific tasks, then close the connection and get back to real life.  Maybe an option could be to use a tablet or a netbook to go on-line and only use your phone for texts, calls and a tethered connection for the tablet / netbook, it might discourage you from being chronically on-line and give you a better experience when you do go on-line.  It would also allow you to use an up to date browser and not something abandoned by the phone manufacturer years ago.

ive never considered a smart flip-phone but it sounds like a really cool idea. whenevr i want to take a break from my modern phone i just delete all the apps on my phone and just use the browser version lol. the apps make it way too easy to click and scroll, but the browser is just bad enough to enjoy for only a moment till it sucks and i get off

mannn that sounds like a good idea, i kinda wanna look into that more myself. literally all i would worry about is my silly little animal restaurant (my beloved phone app lmao). honestly if i were you, as long as i was sure everything i care about and need the most from a phone was accessible through this one then idk why you shouldnt go for it!

That phone reminds me of keitai phones in japan.

You might even find some good smart keitai phones for sale.

And really? Most social media sites have their own websites and I actually prefer to use my PC instead. It feels better, more space, satisfying clicks of keyboard and mouse and I don't have to hold a hot gadget in my hands.

It's a different experience. My phone is good for listening to music, casual messaging, taking photos and using my Game Boy emulator.

Same here.  It annoys me when things 'need' an app to work and won't work through a website.  Vero is an Instagram alternative, but you can't just go on their website and use it, you need an app.  There's an app for iOS and Android and now there's even an app for desktop, but only if you use Windows or Mac OS, if you use Linux you're out of luck and there's no website login to fall back on.

I feel you "Virtual Insanity".

It's because of this need to have an app or mobile compatibility that most websites these days are boring, plain and very samey.

I can't even use Instagram anymore (I used a modded app by thedise) bc it was just too much for me.
.
Now I mostly communicate with others via SMS (my phone plan allows me to do a lot of that) and Telegram (which has other cool features you can use). There's also Spacehey's IM for when I need a casual chat, so... yeah.

Honestly, I don't do much on my phone other than watch some videos on YT, take some pics and make some edits, some texting, playing some games or using my emulator and, mostly, listening to music.
