I've noticed that there seems to be a lack of people on Spacehey into Nu-Metal. There's plenty of tweens/early teens with Korn and Slipknot in their music tabs, but do they know Nu Metal beyond it? Like, REALLY know Nu Metal? That's why I made this thread, to shed light on forgotten Nu Metal classics and new releases alike that may have slipped through the fingers of many a metalhead. Feel free to chime in too with your own recommendations! Popular, underground, whatever may have you. We already know our Korns and our Slipknots, but maybe a specific album of theirs is slept on. (HINT: ITS KORN'S 2007 UNTITLED ALBUM.)
So I'm gonna start us off by talking about my favorite Nu Metal release ever:
(... Until I Wake Up Bleeding... by Helio)
This album, front to back, is a masterpiece. It's likely early / underground Nu Metal's peak in my eyes. Dissonant, ugly, scarring, disturbing, abrasive, moody, enthralling, entertaining... All of these and more can describe this album. It's like someone took the idea of Nu Metal and then put it through solitary confinement. This album has this overarching, overwhelming feeling of anguish. It feels like this album is dying slowly, too angry to cast stones at specific people or institution and focuses solely on its own suffering and misery. It's bleeding out. It's sample-heavy, blasts you with industrial shrieks of noise and electronic beeps. Riffs are unpredictable and infectious. Drums are drums. The vocalist has incredible range, from straight forward singing that makes you really feel the anguish to rancorous screaming and shrieking. Plus, he has a bit of a southern drawl, too. I like that in a guy.
I'm not a track-by-track kind of person, but I would like to give special attention to Strangle The Hero. It's an almost 10 minute Nu Metal epic that has some of the most gorgeous riffing I've heard in a Nu Metal album. It's not particularly melodic or pretty, but it's raw and strikes me in the same way that some Emo or Screamo albums would (The closest analogue I can think of is Me And Him Call It Us, strangely enough? They're very different, but they evoke the same feelings from me). Absolutely gutwrenching.
