Music Journalism Lately

Forum: Music

I fucking hate that our music media is essentially burning down with every new company merger. Music has changed so much in the last decade, but it feels as though the discussion has been handed over to random influencers (many are adept at their music knowledge and would make it as music journalists if there were fucking jobs) and it leaves out the true fans. So here are some articles I've read that are informative and just well written/documented.

This one is quite old, but it goes through the oral history of afrobeats in the UK and it's further reach:

ACS raves and the rise of UK Afrobeats

One thing I love about International Orange is that it gives me perspective into UK music culture, but also makes the further connection to Britain's politics. This is an article on Pastoral music's connection to nationalism:

No National Anthem

honestly, not a fan of music journalism at all. most of it seems to be written by stuck-up critics or people just praising stuff because it's "popular", not because it has any actual substance. even magazines targeted towards alternative/punk audiences do that sort of thing.

This is a conversation I had with my partner recently. Music journalism is like any other industry, sometimes the most powerful/lucrative/nepo/financially stable people make it to the top of the pile first. But to say that it's not useful because some people are stuck up is far too easy. Like all journalism, music journalism is essential for the ecosystem of indie artists who aren't going to make it to the big time. Music journalism is paramount for marginalized artists, that's why websites like International Orange are essential. They highlight people who won't go mega viral on tik tok. Soemone being stuck up never stopped them from making good music critiques eitherĀ 😉
