The Divide We Face Today

In the modern public square, we see people claiming to be Progressive, and others claiming to be Conservative. They make these claims based off of the blanket that is their political party's ideology. We see today that Conservatism is the choice ideology for Republicans, and Progressivism is the choice for Democrats. Amazingly, these ideologies coexist all around this country. Despite what the media seems to make people think, objectively these two ideologies are 2 sides of the same moderate coin.

For many reasons, people either find themselves on one or the other. People raised with role models, standards and traditions put onto them by family tend to be Conservative. People raised to forge their own path due to lack of role models, distaste for their environment or visions of a better way tend to be Progressive.

This is why we usually see Conservatives defending "the way it's always been" and Progressives pushing for a "new way".

The beautiful part of it all, is the fact that truly, both sides work together. Despite what you may see on the television these days, there are states, cities, and communities where both sides benefit from the other. Imagine Austin, Texas. A fairly progressive city in the heart of Conservative Texas. Blue transplanted into Dark Red. However, Austin is one of the most successful, thriving and ever-evolving cities in America. It is balanced by the union of the two sides, where either can express themselves and advocate for things they wish to see happen. Is it a perfect city? No.

In comparison to cities that are too Conservative or too Progressive, Austin is far better. This is because both sides complete each other. Conservative people can benefit from the understanding of marginalized and under represented peoples, and Progressive people can benefit from the idea of tradition and understanding the values of expectations and standards.
