Hot Take: The new wave doesn't equal goth discussion is stupid!!

There are soo many things going on in the world and in the Alt community in general that I find it odd that people really focus on this out of all things

Didn't think this was an unpopular opinion but it seems like it might be, gothic metal is not a subgenre of gothic rock, therefore it's not "goth music". Online, people seem pretty upset about this fact and say "it literally has the word "goth" in it, so it's goth!", which is obviously nonsense. Gothic Metal is a subgenre of metal, if it were a subgenre of goth, it'd be "metallic goth" or something. LOL. A lot of goths do enjoy gothic metal of course, but that doesn't mean you have to keep trying to force it in as a subgenre. I feel like that usually comes from people who just listen to bands like Type O Negative or Evanescence and wanna quickly get themself a ticket to the goth subculture but are too lazy to look into actual gothic rock.

P.S. I love gothic metal.

I like to think that goth as a subculture has many different genres. Darkwave, post punk, gothic rock, gothic metal, stuff like that. It doesn't have to be just one genre. Then again, I could be wrong, I could be right.

you are right! those are subgenres, except for gothic metal. gothic metal is a subgenre of metal rather than goth.

The fact that subculture is not something that must necessarily follow all the rules, listen to the same music, and so on. In general, this should develop and not stand still, otherwise some kind of engine will die.

Also why if im goth i cant listen somtemies other music? like electronic or nuclear rap?
idk

I think that the worst part of the culture is the fervent need to "fit" in to a particular sub-culture and forgetting that the whole culture is about not fitting in in the first place. It takes the fun away from people who are trying to express themselves and I think makes it an unnecessarily hostile environment, but that's just my opinion as someone who has always been watchong from afar.

I don't really like seeing how social media is influencing some of the younger goths in the subculture. Like, it's okay to care about the characteristics and what makes goth what it is, but I get the impression that I'm seeing a lot of babybats, for example, overly concerned with being 'goth enough.' If you enjoy it, you'll naturally end up doing your research and consuming the art. Feel free here because it's that sense of freedom that makes you a goth. Don't be prejudiced or conservative, and share our philosophy, and the rest will fall into place!
