the internet became shitty when it stopped being user generated and having fun for the hell of it, and became a business

Forum: Reclaiming the Internet Group

I can't express my rage about this enough. You used to only have to make an account for things that would reasonably require an account, like social media. Now if you want to look at images on pinterest without an account it pressures you into making one. There's no anonymity anymore, you HAVE to put your email, you HAVE to give your phone number, you HAVE to share your location, and for what really??? so that they can sell my data? it's so over. user generated stuff was fun, now I just feel like i'm being watched.

rant over lol

The way the web has been so homginzed and correaled into like 4 sites makes me sad, there's no more fun websites to explore anymore and everything is so samey and minimalist

Makes me sad that the indie web is near gone unless you activitly dig and look for it now a days

Yup, Instagram is like that too, if you just want to view pictures on
someone's account you can only go back so far (and not very far really)
and you can't enlarge the images either, if you want to do either of
those two things it seems you need to make an account.

I miss those days they wouldn't hound you for logins or paywalls! I wish the corporate hellscape wouldn't follow me to what once was my escape from reality.

truth! i really should research when all of this changed, because it feels like a more recent marketing tactic. i swear to god when i was growing up it wasnt like this, and its such a scummy thing for companies to do.

seriously, i wish i could just check everything out without needing an account for every little thing. it's a hassle! I'm starting to humour the idea of deleting my emails and start everything over

If you're thinking of doing that, or even if you're not, it would be a good idea to go through your email and find every single account you've opened and consider closing accounts you don't need or use any more.  For one thing, you don't know how good each website is with their security, closing unnecessary accounts shrinks your exposure to hacks or mishaps.  Also it would suck to realise you had an account you needed access to but couldn't because you don't have that email address, or you want to make an account with a certain username but couldn't because it's already taken - by you!

I have a separate email address I use for my accounts, I'm trying to segregate things out.  In fact it might be good to have yet another address for accounts I don't really care about, for the sites I'd rather not make an account for but might consider doing so.

Sadly, anything that becomes popular and that can be used to make money will eventually become a way to make profit.

And unless they're able to make it on donations like Spacehey and Neocities, the website owners will have no choice but to sell to a larger company, who will then bend over backwards to make sure they appease the corporate people that make them the most money.
