Does anyone have good advice on how to describe a character without spending too long on it or having it come across as too fanfic-y?

I would say 1) fraction the infos you give (ex. instead of describing the character in one block, give some details step by step in your story!)

2) use the description to serve the plot; (ex. if a character has scissors instead of a hand (idk), why is that? Will it be used to cut something specific? Is it something so eye-catching that every other character has to acknowledge it?)

3) Get the attention somewhere else (ex. instead of writing "she had long black hair" you could write "she brushed her long black hair with her hand" or whatever)

Ofc these are just examples! Pick and chose what suits your story best. Hope it helps!

Do it sparingly in different pages. Also, make sure it comes up naturally at least every once in a while.
