this is spontanious and i encourage anyone reading this to contribute in their own ways to xmpp as a whole in its ecosystem
seriously like the ecosystem for xmpp is lacking but back in the day it wasn't like that cuz all these technologies weren't trying to reinvent xmpp for some kind of self benefit to profit yet.

xmpp is a protocol used primarily for messaging. specifically messaging. discord was created actually because when gaming with others online before discord existed, people could use many other alternatives but for gaming apparently a particular common choice was teamspeak and irc chats. in a less appropriate way of re-explaining what i just said, the creator clearly didn't understand xmpp so he made even more of a
mess reinventing the wheel. no like, actually, he made discord basically
because he had a poor understanding of how xmpp worked and discord had
ended up getting popular for the way it took an open source concept and
tried to kind of like.. considerably confiscate it instead of allowing
the butterflies to fly free. i get it, it shouldn't be illegal or forbidden to reinvent a wheel, it's just that common sense when considering why someone would do it can help a lot in the long time.

heres are resources to get started with xmpp
more to come soon (kinda lol but true)
what client would i recommend if someone were to ask me?
it depends on your preference really, people often recommend gajim but i use psi+ webkit (version).
there are several xmpp clients sorted and shown on the xmpp.org website.
for my personal preferences
there's psi (the one that has rare releases because its made to be a stable xmpp client, then there's psi+, it's specifically a development testing version, it runs pretty fine though for me. I'd say try the psi client instead of psi+ first if you aren't sure what to do. experimentation is fun, you just gotta let yourself have your hands move things around and figure stuff out at times.
also, the webkit version of psi+ called "psi+ webkit's difference is as described on psi+'s wiki itself to be this: "The Psi+ version with WebKit support provides allows using application
themes, as well as animated smileys when displaying messages in
conferences and chats."

I'm gonna be honest i thought this was already something you could do in the psi+ non webkit and psi versions. so yeah. experiment, it's not like really a pain in the ass or anything especially if you like to tinker, or maybe it will be a pain in the ass. I scream at my computer sometimes in a really autistic way sometimes so maybe take my word when i say xmpp basically doesn't have to be rocket science.
