One of the best debates ever about the sport of bowling is who the greatest bowler really is. There is really only 5 candidates for the title, as follows:
1. Walter Ray - Deadeye has the most titles, and a hearty amount of majors, landing an impressive 8 majors and 7 POTY awards. On top of that, he has a record-breaking PBA50 career, breaking the record once held by the legendary John Handegaard.
2. Earl Anthony - Earl the pearl had an electric career, winning 43 pba tour titles, with an outstanding 10 major championships, which would remain the record for most titles (until it was broken by Walter) and majors (tied by Pete Weber in 2013, broken by Belmo in 2019.) He also won 6 National Championships.
3. Norm Duke - The final person on this list to mark 40 PBA Titles. Norm has always been a fan favorite for many, known for being a short kind fella, with a stroke so recognizable. He won 7 majors in his 38-year PBA career. He also holds the record for being the youngest title win in PBA history, winning the 1983 Cleveland open at 18 years of age.
4. Pete Weber - The bad boy of bowling took home 37 titles in his long, fruitful career. He tied Earl Anthony for most majors won by winning the 2013 Tournament of Champions. He also holds the accomplishment of having 5 US Open titles, where one of the best quotes in sports history was born: “Who do you think you are, I am!”
5. Jason Belmonte - Last but certainly not least on this list is the two-hander from down under. Belmo has shattered the record for most majors in the PBA tour, his most recent 15th major coming with the 2023 Tournament of Champions. He is best known not only for his 31 career titles, but also his two-handed style that took the bowling world by storm.
Some other honorable mentions: Parker Bohn III, Mark Roth, Don Carter, Don Johnson, Dick Weber, Johnny Petraglia.
Let me know what you think!
