For science fiction that's a little creepy, Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas". It's a short story/narrative about a futuristic and idyllic city hosting a dark secret that expands into a thought experiment exploring moral compromise.

it's a bit of an undertaking to read but i thought house of leaves lived up to all the hype
