the best way to dress punk, is by understanding what punk means. It's not just for the aesthetics, punk is politics, punk is rebellion, so praxis is the key.
how does praxis relate to punk? because praxis is a fundamental aspect of anarchism, and anarchism is a fundamental aspect of punk ideologies.
- buy local, from small business or flea markets
- if you're going to thrift, don't gentrify thrifting
- DIY (this will be your bestie);
By recycling your old clothes, or customizing by yourself, you're avoiding the waste of materials and the cycle of consumerism that's fucking up our planet and harming economy. You can dye, tear, break and more to your old pieces of clothing. Sometimes a sewing machine is way more punk than lots of leather and spikes.
- recycle: anything can be used, from old soda cans to make studs and spikes, to old leather to make chokers, chains to make accessories, minerals for pigment, etc.
BUYING FROM AMAZON IS NOT PUNK
BUYING FROM SHEIN IS NOT PUNK
i understand not everyone has the privilege to buy ethically, but if you're going to subscribe to a movement with heavy political implications, the most logical is that your own actions match your ideals. That's why i offer DIY and local stores as an option. Cause even if such store buys their products from big chain companies, you're still supporting a small business from your own community. Praxis is reflected through small actions, not only by rioting when needed
- Buy pieces that will last long (even if more expensive than fast fashion); this will cost you less at large, you will have a durable piece that can be wore for many years, such as leather jackets and shoes.
- Don't loose individuality, you don't need to look like a caricature of punk, you can BE punk by looking like a jock, keeping your own sense of personal style and experimenting is the most punk you can be.
this is basically everything, remember that even if some brands like Dr. Martens or Vivienne Westwood hold cultural significance amongst punks, that doesn't mean these brands are still punk nowadays. It's a personal choice to buy from these brands, since historical value it's still important for any subculture, but if you can buy vintage pieces or research about what you're buying, the better.
Hope this helps!
