IRC!!!

I recently found something called Internet Relay Chat, it's really old (like, it was made in the 80s.), and it's still around today. Obviously since I wasn't around in the 80s I can't tell you how it was like back then but when you look into some networks you'll realise what I mean when I say it probably hasn't changed a bit since then.

It's a bit like discord, but the differences are major, and it's a lot more stripped down. There are a very limited amount of trolls and you get the ability to chat immediately to people around the world really easily.

Some things that ppl might need to consider though is that bc it's a bit old it might not appear as easy to navigate as discord, for instance you might find that in some cases it would be a good idea to download a client, which sounds extra but is def worth it. The good thing is that it becomes a lot easier very quickly.

It's also not the most active at times, although it depends on both the network and channels you navigate, also a lot of the people in there seem to be very into tech but I don't think it's at the point of becoming an inconvenience.

It's a lot less centralised, there are a lot of different networks you can join. (I personally love to go on DALnet).

So if you're looking for a place to communicate and are getting tired of discord, or interested in things that have to do with the old internet, or maybe you're just really bored then maybe consider IRC.

Also you might want to check which networks are the most active. Libera.chat, EFnet, OFTC and DALnet seem to be the most populated so far.

IRC is one of those things which I have been aware of since the early 2000s but never actually consciously used.  I say consciously because I'm fairly sure that some chat sites use IRC under the hood so it's entirely possible that I have actually technically used IRC in the past, but that really doesn't count for much.  Might give it a go some time.

fwiw I think Libera's the most active after all the freenode drama y'all can read about if you want.

efnet's cool because it's actually the oldest still living irc network. Originally (this is how I remember it at least, this is even before my time, irc was basically one big network, but there was a badly behaved irc server called eris. eventually the network split in two, one which blocked eris (hence Eris Free Network) and one which didn't.
